The second week of the Championship League Snooker tournament gets underway inside the Mattioli Arena on Monday when two more first round groups are played out with eight more players beginning their campaign.
We have two players who have been in the top 16 recently but dropped out ahead of the new season on show and they are headline a day in which both will be expected to dominate but one or two players might have their sights on changing that narrative.

All eyes will be on table one on Monday where Ali Carter begins his title defence. This was going to be a big tournament for ‘The Captain’ because he won it last year but the fact he has dropped out of the top 16, the more points he can get in his title defence the quicker he’ll be able to get back in with the elite. When you consider that the second seed is Liam Davies, who although he had two good wins in the qualifying competitions last month, hasn’t really done anything on tour, Carter should be confident of progressing. The third seed is Huang Jiahao and the group is completed by the amateur player Jack Bradford who has the opportunity to show his stuff here.

The same sentiments apply over on table two where Gary Wilson will play the role that Carter is playing on the main table. He dropped out of the top 16 towards the end of last season and will certainly want to be back in there for the UK Championship at the so this is a big tournament for him. He looks to have a plum draw here though because the second seed Amir Sarkhosh doesn’t win many matches on the tour. It might actually be that the biggest challenge comes from the third seed Bai Yulu, the women’s world champion who won her British Open qualifier a couple of weeks ago. The amateur player Alex Clenshaw will be the man who completes the group and will want to make the most of his opportunity.

Betting
Liam Davies should be arriving at this tournament in confident fashion after wins in both of his qualifying matches for the two events last month and odds against on him beating Huang Jiahao feels a little on the big side. Jiahao lost all three of his matches in this competition last term and it is hard to point out where he has made massive improvements since then so I think he could be a little vulnerable to a confident opponent.
Davies got better the longer the season went on last term. You would have expected that to be case given that he is still a teenager and it was his first campaign as a professional but he looks to be getting things right now as wins over Mark Davis and Jimmy White last month would testify. Generally so far in this competition the players coming in with momentum have performed better than the ones who have come out of the blocks slowly this season and at odds against I’ll pay to see if that is the case here.

Back L.Davies to beat H.Jiahao for a 3/10 stake at 2.10 with Coral
