Preview
We have three MLS teams and one Liga MX side on both halves of the draw bracket. The Eastern side is headed up by the MLS champions Columbus Crew who took care of the reigning Leagues Cup winners Inter Miami in a pulsating round of 16 game earlier in the week. Their reward is a home game against New York City FC while the other match in the East sees a seemingly back to form Philadelphia Union outfit hosting the surprise package of the tournament in Mazatlan.
The second part of the evening sees the Western part of the bracket play down to the semi-final. Two of the best in the MLS meet in the first of those matches when the Seattle Sounders look to make it into the last four when they host an LAFC side who are expected to go from strength to strength now that Olivier Giroud has joined up with the gang. The Liga MX champions Club America are in the other match. They go up against the Colorado Rapids.
Betting
I think the Philadelphia Union are a good bet here. I watched Mazatlan against Cruz Azul in midweek and while Mazatlan probably deserved their win, prior to opening the scoring from a counter where Cruz Azul left themselves exposed, the Mexican leaders had some golden chances to open the scoring and I suspect if the Union are given the same opportunities they will bury them because they have a number of attacking players who are in useful form.
Philadelphia Union went into this tournament under a form cloud but this side is a different beast when it has Andre Blake back between the sticks and we have seen that in this competition. The Union took care of FC Cincinnati in ruthless fashion in the last round and look to be hitting some form after a slow start to the season where they had to deal with the departure of Julian Carranza. Mazatlan have performed well to get this far but I think their run ends here.
