Copa America 2019 Third Placed Play-off – Argentina vs Chile Tips and Betting Preview

The bronze medal will be decided in the Copa America tournament on Saturday evening when Argentina take on Chile in the third placed play-off in what is a repeat of the final of the last time this tournament was held.

As ever when this match is held the big question is about motivation for the two sides and that will very much be the case here. There are some big names on show here but they are held so highly in the game because they are winners.

Argentina

The tournament never really got going for Argentina and so it was no real surprise when the Argentines were put out of their misery by Brazil in their semi-final. The really disappointing thing is that apart from one crazy moment there wasn’t really a time when Argentina looked like scoring in that match and when you look at the attacking talent at their disposal you would be entitled to ask why that would be the case.

What makes it all the more disappointing is that their defence has been weakening for a while so you would think there would be more intent on their attacking play to deliver the goods. Given how poor it has been it would be no surprise if heads roll after this tournament to get them in better shape for a much stronger tilt at this title when the event reconvenes in Argentina next summer.

Chile

To be fair to the Chileans, they gave their title defence a real good go in their quest to win the competition three times in a row but ultimately they were sent crashing out in some style by Peru in a defeat which is also likely to have repercussions and which will really have hurt given the rivalry between the two nations. Chile just weren’t at the races but that was not the contest to not turn up in.

That came as a real surprise because prior to that loss there were signs that Chile were warming to the task and readying themselves for another tilt at a final. Whether they didn’t take Peru seriously enough only they will know, but if they didn’t then they certainly paid the price for it in a big way. This match might mean more to Chile than Argentina as they look to make up for that loss but time will tell if that is true or not.

Team News

It remains to be seen whether Lionel Messi is involved in this match. Given how poor he has looked you would think he would be rested. Paulo Dybala is yet to see any action in the tournament and now would be an obvious time to get some.

Chile might not make as many changes as Argentina here given that the match does mean a little more to them. They also have a couple of players with an eye on potentially winning the Golden Boot too.

Betting

Argentina are the favourites for this match but my gut feeling is it will be Chile showing the more intent to win the game. In saying that I’m in no rush to back them after their latest ridiculous outing, although to be fair I’m not that bothered about betting on the match outcome anyway. I’m much happier getting involved in the goals where a 2.5 line looks on the low side to me.

Surely this is the match where Argentina offer something in attacking areas. Not only do they need to but Chile have just been torn apart by Peru of all sides. I’ve said all tournament though how I’m not having this Argentine defence and Sanchez and Vargas et al should feast all over this. I’m expecting an open game anyway given there is little on it but it really shouldn’t take a whole lot for over 2.5 goals to land.
