CPL 2020 – Barbados Tridents vs Jamaica Tallawahs Tips and Betting Preview

The second half of the double header from the Caribbean Premier League on Wednesday sees the defending champions Barbados Tridents look to get their title defence back on track when they face the Jamaica Tallawahs in the latest match of the CPL 2020 season.

These two sides have performed well below expectations so far this term and one of them really needs to stand up and be counted in this match. Whoever wins here will be in a good position to extend their season but the losers will be under pressure from here on in.

Barbados Tridents

When the Barbados Tridents won their opening match of the season it looked like they were going to launch a stellar defence of their title. Looks can sometimes be deceiving though and that is how it proved here because they have followed that victory with three successive defeats and in truth they have looked pretty ordinary in all three, and at times they have looked a little clueless which is much more of a concern it has to be said.

Their defeat to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Tuesday was not good. It is well known that the Patriots batsmen don’t play spin very well so for Jason Holder to take so long to bring mystery spin into the attack and then not save any for the death overs was very strange. The other issue the Tridents have is that haven’t really got their batting order sorted out to the point that it can function regularly. You feel one or two players are a lot higher than they should be.

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Jamaica Tallawahs picked up a win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors on Tuesday but once again there was absolutely nothing that was convincing about their batting and that is a real concern. It is all well and good having so much power and batting all the way down to eight but if there is no plan or nobody to take responsibility for the innings and to ensure they take it by the scruff of the neck it isn’t much use to anyone.

Perhaps the chief issue is the captain Rovman Powell who made some strange decisions in the field against Guyana and then had a brain explosion with the bat in hand and that isn’t good. There were rumblings of ructions in the camp in the lead up to the tournament and it has to be said the Tallawahs do look a bit of a mess. One thing which might keep them on track is the fact that they have a very strong bowling attack, when they are used correctly that is.

Key Men

The Jamaica batting is littered with right handers so the leg spin of Rashid Khan is likely to be important for the Barbados Tridents in this match, as might his hitting down the order. With his availability for the latter stages now in doubt he’ll be looking to put in a big performance.

Jermaine Blackwood showed some of the form that saw him score runs in England recently on his return to the CPL scene on Tuesday night. He was one of the few Jamaica batsmen who looked to be hitting the ball well so he could be key in this one.

Betting

Given the way these two sides are batting currently it is hard to see this one being a high scoring epic, especially when you look at what is in each bowling attack. The more you see this Jamaica Tallawahs bowling attack the more I’m beginning to think it holds claims for being the best in the competition pound for pound and with Barbados not having the deepest out and out batting line up in the world the Tallawahs bowlers should enjoy themselves here.

For whatever reason Jamaica don’t look capable of putting a proper innings together at the minute. It isn’t helped by Chadwick Walton seemingly unable to buy a run but they just seem an unorganised mess with the bat. That isn’t good when you’ve got the likes of Rashid Khan and Mitchell Santner in the opposition attack, not to mention some canny seamers. When you put it all together this has the makings of a low scoring match so I’ll go with under 302.5 runs here.
