CPL 2020 – Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Jamaica Tallawahs Tips and Betting Preview

The second half of the double header of action in the Caribbean Premier League on Saturday sees two of the better teams in the competition going at it in what will be the third of 10 outings in CPL 2020 for the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Both sides go into this match with a win under their belt and a defeat to the Trinbago Knight Riders so the winners of this one will be in a good early position in the fledgling regular season table. That should give us a very competitive outing.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors lost their opening match and after the disappointment of the way last season ended there were concerns that they could suffer a real hangover so it was important that they got a win on the board in their second match which they duly did. There was an element of crawling over the line in it we must say but they were so comfortable that we shouldn’t be too harsh on them for taking their eye off the ball temporarily.

The one thing which is apparent is Guyana look on it with the bat. They haven’t produced the best they have with the ball as a collective just yet but we saw last season just how dangerous they can be in that department. Given how last season went, it might be no bad thing for them to have suffered an early loss to have that monkey off their back, but they won’t want to lose two of their opening three matches so there is an ounce of pressure on them here.

Jamaica Tallawahs

Much like their opponents here, the Jamaica Tallawahs have a point to prove this season. Last term was an absolute disaster for them so it was important that they made a good start to this campaign, which they did with a very comfortable win over the St Lucia Zouks but their early momentum was halted pretty quickly when they come out second best to the Trinbago Knight Riders last time out in a match where they simply didn’t score enough runs.

That is the concern for this Tallawahs outfit this season. There is no end of power in their batting order but they need to be careful to recognise when they are in a spot of bother and find players to rotate the strike in order to set the innings up for those power hitters down the bottom of the innings. Carlos Brathwaite was in after eight overs in the last game and that is a situation they will want to avoid. They have every other base covered though it must be said.

Key Men

We have two of the top three batsmen in the competition on show here so the key man for the Guyana Amazon Warriors is Shimron Hetmyer, the West Indies international who has made 50s in both his innings to date.

Glenn Phillips has started the tournament strongly for the Jamaica Tallawahs with scores of 44 and 58 to his name in the two matches so far. He is the one player who can combine power with a bit of nous so Jamaica can ill afford to lose him early.

Betting

There is so much power in these two batting units that I struggle to believe we’re not going to see a whole heap of sixes. The entire top six of the Guyana Amazon Warriors can clear any rope in world cricket let alone this one where there is likely to be a shorter boundary somewhere as the curator continues to utilise the full square for the tournament. If Guyana can clear the ropes Jamaica certainly can. In Andre Russell, Rovman Powell and Carlos Brathwaite they have three of the bigger hitters in world cricket themselves.

There is a little bit of mystery spin in the two bowling attacks but there is enough bowling that can go round the park and with the likes of Shimron Hetmyer and Glenn Phillips in good form to give their teammates confidence to express themselves around those two we should see a pretty high scoring game where the big hits should flow. The sixes line for this one is 13.5 but that feels a little on the low side to me. I’ll play the overs.
