The second part of the double header in CPL 2021 on Saturday sees two sides who are in desperate need of a win to revive their Caribbean Premier League hopes meeting when the Barbados Royals take on the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Between them these two sides have played 10 matches in the tournament and they have a combined three wins so it goes without saying that a win for whoever gets it will be extremely valuable in the chase for the top four.
Barbados Royals
You almost have to feel for the Barbados Royals now. They seem to keep getting themselves in winning positions and then run into someone who does something extraordinary which means they end up snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. When these things keep happening it becomes a test of the mentality of a team. They have to keep doing what they are doing and then just hope that when that big moment comes they get a little bit more luck.
If there is somewhere the Royals can pinpoint as an area when they can improve then it would probably be at the death when they have the ball in hand. They can be guilty of feeding the hitting zone a little too much there so it might be worth Jason Holder bringing spin on a little earlier so that he has one of his better seamers available to him at the end of the innings. The positive for the Royals is they are slowly coming to the boil with the bat.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
This has been a very inconsistent season for the Guyana Amazon Warriors so far, although I guess you could say that about most of the sides in this competition. They Warriors have won both their matches against the Trinbago Knight Riders but lost the other three and although two of them have been against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, you would have to say they have been very ordinary in all three of those losses. Even one of the matches they won they stole from the Knight Riders.
The big problem for the Amazon Warriors, and I guess the biggest surprise, is that they have struggled with the bat this season. That was escalated to the minds of everyone in their last match when they were shot out for 98 but even in the match before that they crawled to 138/9 before coming out on top in the Super Over. In the main they are bowling well but that isn’t likely to do any good if they can’t find a way to put runs on the board.

Key Men
The decision to bowl Ashley Nurse in the final over rather than Oceane Thomas was a bizarre one in the last match for the Barbados Royals but it might be worth giving Thomas a better role because he has the pace which can cause problems.
Nicholas Pooran has been coming in far too low for the Guyana Amazon Warriors this season. I’d like to see him go up the order and take more of the responsibility and that will allow him to play himself in before he gets stuck into this Barbados death bowling.
Betting
There is no getting away from the fact that the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ batting isn’t a concern. It very much is but I refuse to believe that a side that has the likes of Mohammad Hafeez, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran in its ranks can’t possibly get it right at some point. The positive for the Amazon Warriors is that their bowling looks to be on song and the old adage of bowlers winning matches should never be forgotten.
I would imagine we are heading into the realms of the time where the Barbados Royals are starting to question themselves in the tight moments in the matches and that is a terrible position for a team to be in. By bowling a routine off spinner in the final over in their last match, Jason Holder basically admitted he hasn’t got the bowling resources that he would want so if Guyana have any batsmen in at the end of the innings they will soon catch up if they are behind the eight ball. Guyana have to be the bet here.
