CPL 2022 – Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Jamaica Tallawahs Tips and Betting Preview

There is one team left to get their Caribbean Premier League campaign underway and they do so in the first of the two matches to be played on Saturday when the Guyana Amazon Warriors take on the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Tallawahs have already played one match in the tournament and were emphatic winners of it so they will look to pick up a second win in quick succession and have themselves in a decent position early in the competition.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have been the nearly men in this tournament for so long but now they need to turn that into fuel for the fire to push on and finally win this tournament. They have had a stroke of luck that the final stages of the competition will be played in Guyana so they can’t have any excuses on that front so now it is purely down to whether they are good enough to win the event. They look to have the squad to do that for sure.

Al eyes will be on Shimron Hetmyer in this match as he begins his stint as captain of the Amazon Warriors. They need to replace the firepower of Nicholas Pooran but they certainly look to have enough potential firecrackers in their side, especially if a couple of the all-rounders Odean Smith, Romario Shepherd or Keemo Paul come off. They also look to have the spin dimension covered with the ball which is certainly no bad thing.

Jamaica Tallawahs

There were plenty of concerns around the Jamaica Tallawahs at the beginning of the season but they immediately blew those out of the water when they demolished the defending champions St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in their opening match. To be fair the Patriots haven’t exactly franked that form and that is a concern but you can only beat what is in front of you and the Tallawahs did that pretty emphatically it has to be said.

I think the area where people were most concerned about the Tallawahs was their batting power and depth with Andre Russell a thing of the past. What wasn’t factored into the equation was the skill and class of Brandon King and if his start to the season continues then Jamaica should be fine. The one area they didn’t struggle was with the ball and there is no reason why that would change as the pitches begin to wear a touch.

Key Players

Shimron Hetmyer is not just the captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors but he is the best batter and the one which can turn a normal score into a special one. I always think it is important for a new captain to get too a good start with his normal job just to ease any doubts.

Brandon King was in sparkling form in the opening match. It appears he isn’t the shoo in for the West Indies World Cup squad that you would think he is so he needs to keep delivering to give the selectors no choice but to take him.

Betting

We’ve seen the pitches play a little tackier in the day matches in this tournament through the years than in the evening when the dew livens them up a bit but the boundaries here are so short that I expect teams to keep on clearing them. They are short at the best of times but when you consider the wind here usually goes across the ground that will only make one side even shorter and that was certainly in evidence in the first Jamaica Tallawahs match where they hit 15 sixes on their own.

That immediately makes me think that the 14.5 sixes line is too low here. Guyana Amazon Warriors have plenty of six hitting mite in their side as well with the likes of Colin Ingram, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith and Heinrich Klaasen all big hitters of a ball. I think the tacky nature of the pitch might affect the run scoring but the way Caribbean sides go about their business I don’t see it impacting the sixes too much so I’ll take the over.
