The Caribbean Premier League resumes on Wednesday when the CPL 2023 season rolls into its final destination of Guyana for the match between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs.
Guyana have already qualified for the final stage of the tournament and can just enjoy their home leg knowing one win will ensure a top two finish. Jamaica have three matches and need to win two of them to progress.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
The Guyana Amazon Warriors have probably been the team of the tournament so far and now they get to conclude the competition on home soil and will fancy their chances of finally getting their hands on the trophy for the first time. Guyana head into this match having won all five of their completed matches and are favourites not just to finish in the top two in the table but actually to come top of the pile.
The Amazon Warriors have the perfect blend of strong batting which is deep and particularly brutal towards the end of the innings. They have a number of all-rounders who can hit the ball big which allows them to get a number of spinners into their side which in turn means that in theory they should be strong whatever the conditions. That might be important because the pitches can be hit or miss on this ground.
Jamaica Tallawahs
The Jamaica Tallawahs are beginning to run out of wiggle room if they want their title defence to extend into the playoffs. They still have their destiny in their own hands but that really only remains the case were they to win this match. Having won just two of the seven matches they have played this season, albeit one of them was washed out, they need to start finding ways to get over the line regularly as even if they make the playoffs they’ll need to win three knockout matches to retain the title.
The immediate thing the Tallawahs need to do is to find some top order runs. Brandon King started the tournament in brilliant form but has scored just 46 runs in the last four innings. Whether the captaincy is affecting his form only he’ll know but the top five as a whole just aren’t functioning. Their bowling has done what it could to get them out of a whole and you would imagine they’ll go well in these conditions but the champions need more runs to successfully defend their title.

Key Players
Shai Hope has scored three 50s in five innings in this tournament so far but has a high score of 54. He is the one who will be looked at for the others to bat around so they could do with him enhancing that top score.
Imad Wasim has been excellent with the bat in this competition but Jamaica Tallawahs would rather he delivers with the ball more than the bat. That will largely be down to the top order delivering the goods to lessen his impact with the bat and enhance his bowling impact.
Betting
Providence Stadium used to be extremely tough for batting and it might be that the longer this leg of the competition goes on it will revert to type but there were a number of high scoring matches here last season and West Indies played India in two T20 matches here last month and they were higher scoring than games we would normally see here. With this being the opening night of the better part of two weeks in Guyana I’m expecting the wicket to play as well as it is going to here.
That makes me interested in the boundaries for this one. I don’t actually think there are going to be many matches where the home side don’t hit a fair amount of boundaries given the batting depth that they have which frees everyone up to go after the bowling. The Jamaica batting has been more individual efforts than collective force so far but they only need two or three to come off to pepper the boundaries themselves. We have a 36.5 boundaries line for this one and those two T20s here last month had 37 and 42 boundaries and so I like the over in this one.
