Euro 2020 – Group B: Denmark vs Belgium Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The second match of the three at Euro 2020 on Thursday sees Denmark looking to keep themselves in the competition when they host Belgium in a Group B clash in Copenhagen where emotions may still be pretty high.

The match in this group on Wednesday means that Denmark can’t be eliminated from the tournament but they would need something emphatic in their last game if they do lose. Belgium will quality for the knockout stages with a win.

Where to watch

It is ITV1 for this second match of the afternoon. The build-up for the match will begin after the Gold Cup at 4.30pm with the match kicking off at 5pm.

Denmark

Clearly the result of their opening match quickly became irrelevant for Denmark. Thankfully Christian Eriksen looks to be in a much better situation now than on Saturday evening and the Danish players can focus on the day job with the inspiration of performing for him. We can speculate all we like about what the mentality of the Danes will be in this match. It is easy to think they’ll be bang up for it to do it for a stricken teammate but it can take time to get over things like Saturday and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them flat.

The one thing that Denmark will be happy with going into this match is that they come up against a side who won’t pack the defence like Finland did in their first game. Their opponents probably have a weakness in defence so that will give the Denmark players something to exploit throughout these 90 minutes. Clearly the issue will be keeping Belgium at bay at the other end but if they take the mindset that football is only a game and doesn’t really matter they could play with freedom and that makes them very dangerous.

Belgium

There is something pretty weird going on with Belgium in this tournament. They drifted to odds against ahead of kick off in their opening match against Russia and now they were priced up at odds against for this match. I understand that on both occasions they were in the home venue of their opponent but Russia always looked heavily inferior to this Belgium side and Denmark don’t look on a par with them either.

Russia were brushed aside with consummate ease and Belgium will be looking to be ruthless and do something similar to Denmark here and all but secure their qualification into the last 16 at the earliest opportunity. At some point in this tournament Belgium are going to have to ride the weakness of their defence but what they lack in that area of the park they more than make up for in the attacking third where they have some brilliant talent.

Team News

Denmark will be forced into a change from the side which started the Finland match after what happened to Christian Eriksen. Brentford midfielder Matias Jensen is the man most likely to replace the Inter Milan ace.

Belgium are expecting to have Kevin de Bruyne available for this match although he might begin the game on the bench having only returned to training at the beginning of the week. There is also a suggestion that Axel Witsel could be fit to be in the squad too.

Betting

I’m not going to try and guess the mentality of the Denmark players here and because only they know how they are feeling this is a very hard match to bet on. I do think once the game begins there will be some adrenalin in the home players and then the crowd can carry them through but whether they have had enough preparation to win the game remains to be seen. These two met in the Nations League earlier in the season with Belgium winning 2-0 here and 4-2 at home.

They might be significant results but with the Eriksen situation nobody really knows so I’m just going to play it simple and bet on what is see which is a powerful Belgian attack and a not so good Belgian defence. I highlighted before the while Eriksen situation happened that Denmark score a lot more goals than before. They have even more reason to look for goals now. Belgium aren’t shut out very often so both teams to score looks more than fair to me here.
