Euro 2020 – Group B: Russia vs Denmark Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The biggest night in the recent history of Danish football takes place in Copenhagen on Monday evening when Denmark take on Russia in the final match for both sides in Group B of the Euro 2020 competition.

Russia are the team holding all the aces going into this match. If they avoid defeat they will be into the knockout stages of the competition. Denmark will finish in second place themselves though if they win this match and Finland lose to Belgium in the other game.

Where to watch

This match will be shown live in full on BBC2 while the other game is on BBC1. The build-up to the match begins at 7.30pm and the match itself kicks off at 8pm.

Russia

After a disappointing display and an even worse result in their opening match against Belgium, Russia have given themselves a chance of making the knockout stages courtesy of getting over the line against Finland in their second match. They rode their luck a little the longer that match went on but really they should have been much further clear than the one goal they were up by at half-time. They now have that quandary of whether to twist or stick.

You would think it might be better for their hopes if they look to push on in this match because they have shown more than a slight weakness defensively and you think if they look to sit back and play for the draw that at some point in the evening they will get found out. The other thing pushing on would do is potentially lead them to a win which would see them through in second place if Finland don’t win the other game, and therefore set up a winnable last 16 clash with Wales.

Denmark

It has not been a good campaign for Denmark so far but there is still a good chance for them to extend their stay in the event if they can find a win in this match. They can even finish second if they win by enough and Finland lose the other game and I think there would be something fitting about that given how strongly their campaign was affected by the horrible scenes which befell Christian Eriksen in their opening match.

Nobody really knew how they would go in their second match after what happened to Eriksen but they came flying out of the blocks and gave an excellent performance but just ran into a couple of classy operators who were too good for them in the second period. If they can replicate that display though there is every chance that they will have enough to win this match and continue in their quest to push on in this tournament and do it for Eriksen.

Team News

Russia have been boosted by the likelihood that defender Mario Fernandes is expected to be fit despite being stretchered off in the last game. The news isn’t so good on the other side of the defence though where Yuri Zhirkov has been ruled out of the tournament.

Denmark are likely to switch formation for a match they have to win and win well. That could see Jonas Wind coming back into the side to offer more of an attacking threat as the Danes go in search of a place in the next round.

Betting

I expect Denmark to win this game. I haven’t been all that impressed by Russia in the tournament and until Kevin de Bruyne came on Denmark haven’t really struggled defensively at any stage. There is no de Bruyne or anything like his quality against them here so I think Denmark will be a lot more comfortable here. They also know they have to win whereas Russia are in that position of not knowing whether to stick or twist and you almost always see confusion on the pitch when that is the case.

Denmark looked on fire in attacking areas against Belgium and if they have that sort of performance with them here then they are going to be very hard to stop. Denmark know whatever happens they have to win here and score twice and I’m not convinced Russia have it to open up a defence which has a couple of the better centre-backs in Europe in it. While I fancy the overs because of the way this one could play out, 2-0 Denmark is enough of a runner for me to take the Danes on the Asian handicap instead.
