Euro 2020 – Group C: North Macedonia vs Netherlands Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Two more groups conclude at Euro 2020 on Monday with Group C the first one to be decided. We already know that the Netherlands have won this group but they have one more match to play before the knockout stages. That comes against North Macedonia.

Given the position of the group, it is likely that the debutants of North Macedonia will exit the competition after this match but they would love to take a major scalp with them. Netherlands will look to complete a clean sweep of the section and carry plenty of confidence into the knockout stages with them.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on ITV1 in the UK with the build-up show beginning at 4.15pm and the match getting underway 45 minutes later at 5pm.

North Macedonia

North Macedonia promised to give this a right good go coming into the tournament and they have been true to their word so far. I don’t expect anything to change from here on in. They have been outclassed in this group but there is no shame in that on their debut. When they do get home they will probably rue a mad 10 or 15 minutes against Austria where they let a promising position slip but it is all part of the learning curve for them. They need to use this experience to make sure they return and go again.

North Macedonia have offered plenty in attacking areas in their two matches so far but as feared heading into the tournament, they have been found out defensively and that has cost them dearly. You suspect something similar could happen here but they have shown that they have enough to give the Dutch a few headaches themselves. One thing is for sure is we have seen how they were able to beat Germany in qualifying for the World Cup recently.

Netherlands

They rode their luck a little bit in their opening match but the Netherlands have come through both their matches with a win and whatever happens in this match they will win the group, which gives them a little bit of freedom both to play with during the game and also to rotate to ensure that everyone they want to get game time into gets it. At the same time though, they will want to carry confidence through to the knockout stages with them.

The Netherlands have looked very impressive going forward. Now we will get to find out what sort of depth they have in their squad in the attacking areas. If the second string gets their chance and impresses then you have to have them down as dark horses for the title but if they don’t perform then there is a lot of pressure on the first choice to deliver. The issue with the Dutch is their defence. That looks an accident waiting to happen.

Team News

This could be the final international match for Goran Pandev which should ensure that he starts the game and will probably resist North Macedonia from making wholesale changes. Aleksandar Trajkoviski will be looking to regain his starting place.

Marten de Roon is on a booking so he is likely to sit this one out so that he doesn’t pick up another and be suspended for the last 16. Frank de Boer might choose to rotate his wing backs and experienced players. Nathan Ake could start for the first time.

Betting

It is hard to see this match now having a hatful of goals in it just purely because there is no pressure on the two teams. Both sides have shown they are not up to the level defensively but that is especially the case with North Macedonia who have been opened up at will so far and you would expect the Dutch to continue to do that, particularly if Frank de Boer is true to his word about only making a couple of changes to his side for this one.

The goal line for this game is at 3 but I’m not so sure that is high enough. I don’t expect North Macedonia to go out tamely here. I think they will go out having a go and playing with a carefree abandon and look to get plenty of men forward. That will only play into the hands of the Dutch, who themselves aren’t short of options in forward areas when you consider that their wing-backs play almost as out and out wingers. Whichever end they come I think we’ll see over 3 goals here.
