Euro 2020 – Last 16: Sweden vs Ukraine Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The final match in the Euro 2020 round of 16 takes place on Tuesday evening when the Group E winners Sweden take on arguably the luckiest side to make it through the first phase in the form of Ukraine at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Should England defeat Germany in the earlier match on Tuesday, the winner of this would be their opponent in the quarter final so there will be lots of domestic interest should that be the case. If not it will be the Germans waiting for the winner.

Where to watch

This match will be shown live and in full on BBC1 after the fallout from the first game has finished. The build-up should begin around 7.30pm with the match kicking off at 8pm.

Sweden

There have been no surprises with Sweden in this tournament. They have delivered exactly what was expected of them so far in that they have been well organised and fairly defensive minded but when they have got their important players on the ball they have made an impact. That all equates to a draw in their opening match against Spain and then wins over Slovakia and Poland to ensure they finished top of their group.

They will have watched on as the draw has opened up for them and after making it to the quarter final of the World Cup they have the chance to reach at least that stage here. You would expect them to continue to set up defensively but those key attacking players are likely to have plenty of room to play because Ukraine like to get men forward. Those attacking players may need to find the net here because the Swedish defence could come under pressure.

Ukraine

This has been a very up and down campaign for Ukraine so far and there is no doubt that they can count themselves extremely fortunate to make it through to the knockout stages. Not only did they qualify with three points but they did so with a negative goal difference. That came courtesy of group stage defeats in their opening match to the Netherlands and their last game against Austria in a match where a draw would have guaranteed them a knockout spot. In the end the win over North Macedonia in between those losses were enough for them to advance.

Ukraine has looked fairly promising in attack in this tournament. They scored some great goals in their opening two matches but there are a couple of glaring concerns. The first of those is defensively where they don’t look anything like good enough and the second one is a truly terrible display against Austria in their last game. They can argue Austria did that performance more than it deserved with the way they played against Italy but I’m still not convinced.

Team News

Sweden had a big injury scare over the weekend when key playmaker and leading scorer at this tournament for them Emil Forsberg missed training but he has declared himself fit to play so the Swedes could be unchanged here.

Ukraine are keeping an eye on Denys Popov and Aleksandr Zubkov who haven’t appeared since the opening match of the tournament. If Andriy Shevchenko wants to switch his attack around then Viktor Tsygankov could come in from the start.

Betting

I must admit there isn’t a huge amount that I like in this match. I’m hoping Ukraine score because I need one more goal to bring the outright from their team guide in and I’ve backed Sweden to lose in the quarter final which has every chance should they win here so I probably have the match covered in terms of interest in most places. I will go with a player bet that looks a shade overpriced though and that comes in the anytime goalscorer market.

Alexander Isak has looked good in this tournament despite him yet to find the net. In fairness to him in the first game Sweden had none of the ball and in their second game they played against a low block with no space to work with. He was in and around much of the play against Poland and now he faces comfortably the most open defensive side he will have come up against. Isak has shown good movement, which against this Ukraine side can be deadly as the Dutch showed, and he’s also shown that he has a shot on him from the edge of the box which might be no bad thing because the Ukraine keeper department haven’t shown themselves in a great light thus far. You can get 13/5 on Isak to find the net and I think that looks a more than fair price.
