Euro 2020 Qualifying – Friday 22nd March Matches Betting Preview

The middle night of the three that make up matchday one in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying competition takes place on Wednesday evening and it is the night the Three Lions get their campaign underway.

We saw some big guns come through their first matches of qualifying on Thursday evening and a few more get their campaigns up and running on Friday, including the beaten finalists from 2016 in the form of France.

Group A

This is where England have been housed for the next eight months or so and they will begin their quest to qualify for a tournament in which they host the final when they entertain the Czech Republic at a Wembley Stadium venue which will be the place where the eventual champions are crowned. Before then though Bulgaria go up against Montenegro to get this group up and running.

Group B

Portugal get their title defence underway on Friday night but they have been given a tricky looking task when they play host to Ukraine, who aren’t going too badly at the present time. The other match in the group sees two of the lesser teams in action when Luxembourg host Lithuania in a match where you would think both really need to win.

Group H

Beaten Euro 2016 finalist France are the main team in Group H and are expected to breeze into the main tournament. They open up their qualifying campaign with what should be a routine victory over Moldova while the other two matches could be a little more competitive. Andorra host an Iceland side looking to emulate their run to the quarter final of the last tournament. Tensions could run high in the other match where Albania go up against Turkey.

Betting

My focus is going to be on Group A on Friday night where I really like improving Bulgaria to get things off to a winning start for us when they go up against Montenegro. Bulgaria have been in the doldrums for a while but they are starting to turn the corner now and after a good World Cup qualifying campaign, they went very well in the UEFA Nations League taking three wins and two draws from their six matches. Montenegro are going the other way and quite fast. Their only wins in the Nations League came against a useless Lithuania and their star man Stevan Jovetic is injured for this match and the one against England on Monday. That’s a big blow to a side who aren’t full of talent so I’ll take Bulgaria here.

England get their campaign underway at Wembley Stadium in what is a big 15 months for Gareth Southgate and his men. They could win their first trophy in 53 years in June when they go for the Nations League title and then next year they should be major players in a tournament in which they host much of proceedings. England take on Czech Republic who either seem to win or lose these days and are of a standard where they beat those they are expected to but lose to those better than them. In the Nations League they won both matches against Slovakia but lost both to Ukraine to highlight that. England are flying at the minute and with the attacking resources they have I expect them to cover a 1.5 goal handicap.
