Euro 2020 – Semi-Final: England vs Denmark Tips, TV and Betting Preview

England play their biggest match at Wembley Stadium in 25 years on Wednesday evening when they take on Denmark in the second semi-final of Euro 2020, with both sides knowing they are playing for the right to meet Italy in the final on Sunday.

These two sides have got better with every match they have played in this tournament and will be looking to peak for this one to set themselves up with a chance at glory come Sunday evening. This is set up to be a very competitive match.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the ITV1 channel. With this being such a huge match there is a 90 minute build-up which begins at 6.30pm before the game kicks off at 8pm.

England

Although there was a bit of doom and gloom around the England performances in the early stages of this competition, you would have to say their campaign so far has been perfectly played out in that they took their time to hit their straps but were always in control of qualifying. Since they have hit the knockout stage though they have looked very good indeed and will go into their sixth match of the tournament still yet to concede a goal.

The criticism was coming because they were not scoring goals but six in their last two matches have turned that on its head and now there is a lot of optimism around this England side, who are competing in a second successive semi-final at a major tournament after reaching the final four in the World Cup three years ago. They will be hoping the experience of that occasion will serve them well in this contest.

Denmark

Earlier in the tournament it was easy to suggest that Denmark were motivated for continuing in this tournament so that they could do it for Christian Eriksen. There might still be something in that but you shouldn’t use that to mask what an excellent side they are and they have shown that in their last three matches. This isn’t the Denmark side which went to Wembley in the Nations League and ground out a 1-0 win. This is a much more offensively vibrant unit.

That doesn’t mean that they are weak defensively by any stretch of the imagination. The one thing that the Christian Eriksen incident did do was put football into perspective and you get the impression they have played without pressure since then. That is something that could serve them very well in this semi-final. Another thing that will help is a number of their senior players will know all about the England team as they play in the Premier League with and against them.

Team News

It would appear that England are going to go in with the same setup which served them so well against Ukraine in the quarter final with perhaps the only change being the return of Bakayo Saka for Jadon Sancho.

Denmark have reported no new injury concerns so the only player missing for them will be Christian Eriksen. It looks like Yousuf Poulsen will have to do with a place on the bench once again after the form of Kasper Dolberg.

Betting

I’m not going to get too involved in this match. I’m an Englishman who has a betting slip with Denmark to win the tournament outright on it so I’m already deeply emotionally attached to this match. I have to admit I’m slightly concerned if Denmark score how England will respond and if I needed a stronger betting interest in this match I probably would take the odds against on both teams to score but I don’t need one. There is a player angle in that I’ll look to exploit though.

If Denmark are going to get in you would think it would be down their left where England were exposed once or twice by Ukraine who didn’t have the quality to take advantage of that. Denmark will though and that makes me think that the prices on Joakim Maehle to score anytime or to produce an assist are a little on the high side at 11/1 and 13/2. He scored in the wins over Russia and Wales and set the winner up against the Czechs in the quarter final and is likely to be up against Kyle Walker in a match he can get the better of. With Mikkel Damsgaard wandering out towards the left Denmark are likely to come down that was so the prices on Maehle to contribute directly to a goal look big to me.
