The French Open concludes on Sunday afternoon when the final of the men’s singles draw takes place on the Philippe Chatrier Court at Roland Garros when Jannik Sinner faces Carlos Alcaraz for the second Grand Slam title of the year.
That means that much like in the women’s draw, the top two seeds go at it here with Alcaraz looking to defend the title he won last year and Sinner to win it for the first time. Everything is there for a cracking final.
Jannik Sinner
Going into the tournament, there were one or two questions about whether Jannik Sinner would be a little undercooked as he goes in search of a third successive Grand Slam title after securing the US Open at the back end of last year and the Australian Open crown at the beginning of this one. A three-month ban from the sport meant that he could only play one clay court event prior to the French Open, which came along in Rome where he made the final, only to lose to the man who will be on the other side of the net here.
Sinner has looked anything but undercooked in this tournament though. He has breezed through to the final without dropping a set, seeing off the challenge of Novak Djokovic with the minimum of fuss along the way. In fact, the Italian has rarely been troubled in a single set in this tournament let alone in a match. That might mean he isn’t battle-hardened but what it also means is that he is hitting the ball exceptionally well and will take a lot of beating here.
Carlos Alcaraz
The defending champion arrived in Paris off the back of winning the Rome Masters and was probably seen as the favourite by many to win this tournament. Unlike Sinner, Alcaraz hasn’t had a three-month sabbatical and he beat the man considered to be his biggest rival for the title in the final in Rome in front of his home people. Alcaraz has lived up to the expectation in this tournament and now he has one last job to do in order to complete a successful title defence.
It hasn’t been all plain sailing for the Spaniard over the fortnight. Only two of his six matches have been won in straight sets and there was a time in the semi-final with Lorenzo Musetti where he was really under the pump but fortunately for the defending champion the Italian was let down by his body and Alcaraz was able to progress. Alcaraz has come through the draw fine but you sense he’ll need his best effort of the tournament here if he is to win again.

Head-to-head
These two are certainly no strangers to facing off against each other. Their recent meeting in the final in Rome was meeting number 11 between the two and by winning that match Carlos Alcaraz extends his career advantage over Jannik Sinner to 7-4, which includes winning their last four matches. Alcaraz also has the edge between the two on clay, leading 2-1 in their past battles, one of which was in the semi-final here a year ago when the Spaniard took the Italian down in a deciding set. This will be the fourth time that they meet in a final and it is Alcaraz who has the edge there too. He leads 2-1 so history is very much on his side.
Betting
As punters we have the classic battle between the historical record between these two, which would have you backing Carlos Alcaraz with a bit of confidence, against the eye test which tells us that Jannik Sinner has looked much the better of the two this week which should give his followers a degree of optimism that the career record means nothing. I do think the past plays a part but when these situations come along I have to go with the here and now and that leads me into backing Sinner here.
He has been by far the better player of the two to my eye this fortnight. His recent record against Alcaraz isn’t fantastic but he went down in a deciding set here last year having led 2-1, in a deciding set tiebreak in Beijing and then in Rome he missed two set points in the first set to win that and that would have looked so much different so even though Alcaraz has won their recent meetings, a point here or there and we could be looking at a much different record. Sinner has looked impenetrable this fortnight. If Novak Djokovic couldn’t get anything out of him Alcaraz will have to play out of his skin to do it. That is perfectly possible of course but in a pick ‘em match I’ll go with the guy who has played the best this fortnight which is Sinner.
