French Open Tennis – Day 9 Matches Betting Preview

The make up of the quarter final line up will be determined at the French Open on Monday when the top half of the respective singles draws are played out to the last eight stage in what should be another entertaining day in the French capital.

Sunday recap

It was a second good day in a row for our bets in this tournament as although he was beaten in straight sets by Andy Murray, John Isner remained inside the 6.5 game handicap to ensure our only bet on the day was a winner.

Unfortunately it wasn’t so good on the outright front as our two remaining outrights – Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kei Nishikori were both beaten to end our interests in the tournament markets themselves.

Elsewhere on another rain interrupted day there were wins for the defending men’s champion Stan Wawrinka and Albert Ramos-Vinolas while in the women’s draw Shelby Rogers came through in straight sets. Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska both hold advantages in their matches which will need to be finished on Monday.

Monday – Men’s Matches

Novak Djokovic is back in action again on Monday as he continues his quest for a first French Open title. He takes on Roberto Bautista-Agut and no offence to the Spaniard but it is hard to see him winning that one. Bautista-Agut might have enough about him to sneak a set but that’s about all I can give him.

The pick of the matches on paper is the one between David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych. I’m not convinced by Berdych at the minute but I would probably still have him favourite for this match. He isn’t though, Ferrer is but he is a man very much on the down trend. In truth I don’t really fancy either and neither do I fancy any of the side markets.

Dominic Thiem would probably have expected to face Rafael Nadal on Monday but the Spanish legend pulling out means that it is a different Spaniard that the talented Austrian will face. He will instead play Marcel Granollers for a place in the quarter final. I can’t see past Thiem there but given I’m on him for the quarter I’ll let him win at the prices particularly with a fresher Granollers likely to be good for a set.

The other game sees David Goffin facing Ernests Gulbis and that is a match I’m interested in from a betting point of view. Goffin has really impressed me in this tournament even though he needed all five sets to see off Nicolas Almagro in the previous round. He showed all of his fighting qualities in that match and that bodes well for what is likely to be a real battle with Gulbis here.

Gulbis looks to be hitting the ball as well as ever this week and while he trailed to Tsonga before the Frenchman withdrew on him in the previous round he has still showed enough to suggest he is going to be competitive in this match and perhaps snatch a set or two if not all three.

The odds seem to think this will be a straight sets win for Goffin and while I think the Belgian will win I think that is being incredibly unfair on Gulbis and what he has offered this week so far. I think we’ll see at least four sets here and over 37.5 games.

Monday – Women’s Matches

The pick of the matches in the women’s draw on Monday sees the two top 10 seeds Venus Williams and Timea Bacsinszky going head to head in what looks an even looking match. There is a part of me that thinks Venus is a big price in this one but I’m reluctant to take Bacsinszky on so I’ll tentatively leave that one alone.

Serena is also on the courts on Monday. She takes on the talented Ukrainian Elina Svitolina for a place in the quarter final and while Svitolina could be competitive for a while I don’t see her having enough to win and the same can be said for Kiki Bertens in her match against Madison Keys.

That leaves me with the other match which sees Carla Suarez-Navarro continue on her quest for a first Grand Slam singles title. She faces the surprise package of the top half of the draw in Yulia Putintseva in a match I think the Spaniard will win.

Credit to Putintseva for coming this far in the tournament and in beating Petkovic and Knapp in the last two rounds she has looked really good but they didn’t play their best games against her and I just wonder how the Kazakh will do when she is in a battle which she may well be here.

Suarez-Navarro is at home on this surface and showed her class to beat Cibulkova in the previous round. A repeat of that performance should be too much for Putintseva in this one.
