The opening day of the German Darts Masters was a pretty low key affair on Saturday but the tournament is set to crank up a notch on Sunday when the 16 seeded players enter the fray.
Sunday’s two sessions will see the last 32 of the tournament played out as players look to get through to Monday where the tournament will be decided and the big money won.
There are plenty of big names and big games on the card on Sunday so we should get a really good day of darts out in Munich. With it being a holiday the crowds should be good and that should inspire the players to produce the goods on the oche.
The afternoon sees the likes of Dave Chisnall, James Wade and Robert Thornton in action. Chisnall and Wade are involved in matches that they should win but Thornton might have his work cut out against Chris Dobey who looked good on the opening day. That said Thornton should be full of confidence from his win in the Premier League on Thursday.
Terry Jenkins and Ian White are also seeds in action in the afternoon but it is in the first game of the day where my bet comes in this session. It sees Brendan Dolan taking on the Spanish star Cristo Reyes.
Dolan’s form has just disintegrated and unless something changes soon his seeding in these events is going to disappear so every tournament that comes and goes without him winning some matches sees the pressure cranking up on him.
I always think the European players are under less pressure in these tournaments because although the standard is improving in central Europe the best players will always qualify for these events so there is always another week.
Reyes is a top quality player in his own right. He should be looking at the likes of Mensur Suljovic and his rise into the upper echelons of the game and looking to emulate that because he is good enough. If he is to do that then he has to take care of handy draws like this one and maximise his earnings from it.
Reyes is a solid scorer and as long as he can bang in a consistent level of doubles I expect him to have too much for a Dolan who seems in a rut that he is struggling to get out of at the minute.
The really stellar names join the party in the evening session and there are some really juicy clashes in store for us. Peter Wright vs Stephen Bunting headlines the night while Gary Anderson and Daryl Gurney should be a cracker. Michael van Gerwen faces the man who so nearly produced the biggest upset in World Championship history against him in December in Rene Eidams in an interesting match up.
Adrian Lewis, Michael Smith, Jelle Klaasen and Benito van de Pas are also slated to be on stage in the evening session so a high quality night is in store but from a betting point of view there isn’t a lot that stands out.
If I was to back something it would be Bunting to beat Wright but I’m already on the Bullet outright so I don’t need to double up a match bet on him especially as he’s likely to progress a bit deeper into the event should he see off Wright so I’ll take just the one on Sunday.
