German Masters Snooker 2025 – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the German Masters sees two sessions of play taking place inside the Tempodrom in Berlin as we start out on one of the better weeks of the snooker season with plenty at stake for so many.

The beauty of the change in qualification for this tournament is that we have the top 32 through to the main draw and many of them are on show on the first day including the two best ranked players in the world.

Afternoon Session

The way the arena is set up this week we have four streamed tables out of the seven in operation in all and the main TV table will be occupied by the world champion Kyren Wilson. He will start out the tournament against Ka Wai Cheung. The other three streamed tables see the former Shootout winner Chris Wakelin taking on Hammad Miah while two veterans meet when John Higgins goes up against Mark Davis and the former International Championship winner Zhang Anda faces Graeme Dott.

Neil Robertson is the big name on one of the three tables which isn’t being streamed in this session. The English Open winner will go up against the Polish youngster Antoni Kowalski while elsewhere we have Robert Milkins looking to make it through to the second round when he goes up against the Chinese player Xu Si. The other match sees Zhou Yuelong on show. He takes on the dangerous player from Latvia in the form of Artemijs Zizins.

Evening Session

The evening session will be headlined by the world number one Judd Trump who will begin his title defence on the TV table when he takes the qualifier David Grace for a spot in round two. Three other matches will be streamed in this session and the main attraction will be the one featuring The Masters champion Shaun Murphy. He plays the Shootout finalist Liam Graham while Barry Hawkins is another top 16 player in action. Alfie Burden will be his opponent and the other streamed match will see Jak Jones taking on Allan Taylor.

There are a couple of competitive looking matches among the three what won’t be streamed in this session. The pick of those could be the one between the former world champion Stuart Bingham and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh which should be full of high scores. Stephen Maguire is another household name who will be looking to make it through to round two when he faces Joe O’Connor while the other match sees Dave Gilbert battling it out with Ben Woollaston.

Betting

Joe O’Connor has won the two previous meetings with Stephen Maguire, the latest of which was here last year, and I think the even money on him to complete the hat trick looks a good thing here. O’Connor has been very active this month having competed in a number of Championship League groups with plenty of success in them and while this is a different environment and pressure we know he is more than capable of handling that.

This will be the first time we will have seen Stephen Maguire in competitive action in 2025 and indeed he has only played once since December 12 so there is every chance that he is a little rusty going into this match and that doesn’t bode well against a player who has plenty of competitive frames under his belt. Maguire hasn’t really done a whole lot this season and he just looks vulnerable to me to a much more active player in O’Connor.
