The second match in the Global Super League season sees the host team Guyana Amazon Warriors going up against the defending champions Rangpur Riders in the opening game of the second staging of the competition for both sides.
Guyana would have been expected to win their own party last season but they couldn’t get the job done. Rangpur were the ones who pulled off the upset to win the tournament in 2024 and they will look to open their title defence with a win here.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
The last time we saw the Guyana Amazon Warriors in action was in the Global Super League in December. The tournament has moved forward this year so in many ways it is a preparation for the Caribbean Premier League campaign rather than the byproduct of it. Guyana will be looking to use home conditions to their advantage much better than they did in this competition last year but they remain the best looking team on paper and need to convert that onto the field now.
The Warriors appear to have largely got the majority of the band back together for this tournament which they weren’t able to do for this competition last year so you would expect them to come out really strong, especially if they have a feeling that they have a point to prove. They look well stocked with the bat and one thing we do know about the Warriors is that they recruit for the lower conditions at Providence which bodes well for them.
Rangpur Riders
The Rangpur Riders couldn’t build on their win in the Global Super League when it came to competing in the Bangladesh Premier League. They did reach the finals but they put in a stinker of a display in the Eliminator and weren’t able to progress any further than that. As you would imagine, they haven’t been able to get their key players over to the competition but that didn’t stop them from winning the inaugural running of the event.
The Riders arrive in Guyana with a number of spin options at their disposal and that certainly isn’t a bad thing. They have been canny enough to take a couple of players from the Major League Cricket competition too so they will be able to hit the ground running which is another positive. The question mark is whether they have enough with the bat but the longer this tournament goes on you would imagine what they have with the ball will be more important.

Key Players
Moeen Ali could be a key player for the Guyana Amazon Warriors. He has been active for the Bears in the Vitality Blast so he will be well used to the rhythms of T20 cricket and should be able to offer the goods with bat and ball.
You would imagine that spin is going to be king in this match so Tabraiz Shamsi, who has been a regular in the Caribbean Premier League, could be the go to man with the ball for the Rangpur Riders in this one.
Betting
We have a fairly low run line here but you would expect that to be the case in Guyana. To be fair the opening match of the day had a few runs in it but still didn’t cover the run line for this one. That run line is 322.5 which I’m not sure gets covered even if the Guyana Amazon Warriors have a day out with the bat batting first. They could get 200 but there is no guarantee that Rangpur get the 123 that is needed to cover it.
How much of last season we can use as a form guide remains to be seen but in the tournament last year the only time Rangpur made more than 141 was in the final when Soumya Sarkar went of on one but I’m not at all convinced that they score well against this bowling unit. The one thing the Riders do have up their sleeve is good pace off bowlers so there is no guaranteed that Guyana go all that well with the bat. I’m prepared to take the under on a used pitch.
