Glorious Goodwood 2019 – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

We have reached the penultimate day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting down in Sussex and after three standout days of racing we are looking forward to what the final two bring. The main attraction on the card is the King George Qatar Stakes in which Battaash is an extremely warm favourite. You won’t get rich backing him but we can’t really oppose him so we will focus our betting attentions on the race before that one.

3.00 Goodwood: Unibet Golden Mile Handicap

Preview

One of the big handicaps of the week is the Golden Mile with 20 runners going to post.  The key to this is a low draw because of the sharp turn not far after the start and the fact the cutaway has been removed for races on Friday and Saturday of Glorious Goodwood.  So, the starting point is to remove anything drawn more than 10 away from the rail, this immediately cuts the field by half.

This filter doesn’t remove the favourite who is Mojito, a horse that won for William Haggas last month on his first start for almost 2 years.  That was a super impressive performance, beating some of today’s rivals, but can he follow up off just a 3lb higher mark? He’s a worthy favourite but 3/1 in a 20 runner field of experienced handicapper’s is not for me.

Betting

There’s 2 against I like.  The first is Haggas’ other runner and last year’s winner of this race, Seniority.  He’s drawn 11 but, with a non runner from stall 5, that effectively becomes 10.  He’s ridden by Ryan Moore and nobody rides this race better as he’s won the last 3 renewals of this.  Last year, he won this off 3lb lower and that was his only run at the track. Since then, his form hasn’t been that good but he’s raced in Group races and on the sand.  He also had a stint in Meydan. Despite all of that, his best run was when 2nd at Epsom to Gossiping; what I like about that was it was his only other run on an undulating quirky track.   Conditions look perfect and I cannot see him out of the frame.

The other selection is the O’Meara trained Baltic Baron ridden by Danny Tudhope.  This horse has mainly been plying his trade in France where he won just 1 race but there, coupled with his runs in the UK, have seen finished 2nd on 8 occasions in just 14 career starts so you could say he deserves to win one!  He’s been 2nd on all 3 turf runs in the UK, twice in Class 2 handicaps off marks 1lb and 2lb lower. Last time out, off this mark, he was 2nd in a Class 3. He’s never run in a field bigger than 12 but you could argue that his 2 best runs have been in the biggest fields he’s faced so there’s a hope the hustle of a 20 runner handicap could bring about improvement.  Connections also reach for a first time visor so, with a good draw in 6, there’s plenty of hope that he’ll land a long overdue decent prize at rewarding odds.
