Glorious Goodwood 2019 – Stewards Cup Tips and Betting Preview

It is the final day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting on Saturday and after a decent enough, if a little unlucky with a couple of the selections, time of things on the punting front we are focusing our attentions on one of the standout races of the whole week for our final betting interest in the meeting.

3.40 Goodwood: Unibet Stewards Cup

The big handicap of the week is the 6 furlong Stewards Cup where 27 go to post.  In a field of this size, you need luck but more than anything, you need proven form in big field handicaps and that leads me to 2 bets in the race.   It’s such an open heat that I can’t be having anything in the betting in single figures and the 2 I’m drawn to are overpriced in my opinion.

Place a single bet in any live selected races. If your horse wins at SP odds of 3/1 or greater, you will receive a free bet to the same value of your stake, up to 25.

Betting

The first is Gunmetal from the shrewd David Barron who is deserving of a big handicap winner.  Kynren, Clon Coulis and this horse itself have all been denied in big handicaps in unfortunate circumstances this term.   He ran in this race last year, finishing midfield, and is now 5lb higher but there are good reasons for that.  He bolted up in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon and, since then, has finished 4th in a big field handicap at York over a furlong shorter.  However, the run that impressed me was his 6th in the Wokingham where he ‘won’ his race on the far side.  I like any horse that effectively wins their own mini-race because of draw bias as the handicapper very rarely reacts.  Off the same mark today, he’s sure to go close.

Spanish City looks to be the Varian second string on jockey bookings but I don’t see it like that.  This is a horse that needs a bit of luck but loves a big field handicap; since the start of last term, he finished 6th of 27, 1st of 15, 2nd of 18, 6th of 27, 4th of 20 and 4th of 17.  Whichever way you look at it, that’s solid form.  He also needs fast ground which he’ll get here and another plus is that he’s drawn in and around the pace.  Interestingly, connections reach for first time blinkers.  That could be the difference today and, like our other selection, I can’t see how he won’t be in the mix at the finish.
