The knockout stages of the Gold Cup get underway on Saturday night when the first two quarter finals are played out over in Houston as we find out the two sides who will meet in the opening semi-final of the event.
Mexico are the side expected to breeze through on Saturday evening but their clash with Costa Rica looks very interesting while the other match, which sees Canada taking on Haiti looks every bit as thrilling in its own way.
Haiti vs Canada (00.00)
The first of the quarter finals sees two sides who will have quietly fancied their chances coming into the tournament meeting for a semi-final spot when Haiti takes on Canada in what should be something of an open affair.
Both these teams showed in the group stage that they are a lot better going forward than they are defensively and that is how I expect both to approach this last eight clash. Haiti have shown they are no fearer of reputation having beaten Costa Rica to win their group but Canada have had an energetic attacking verve to their play thus far which should serve them well here.
I like over 2.25 goals a lot here. Canada have been free scoring in the tournament but Haiti have players who can add to the scoring and when you combine the two, and put their indifferent defensive displays into the mix there is a genuine case to be made that we will see a fair few goals in this opening quarter final.
Mexico vs Costa Rica (02.30)
The second quarter final sees the pre-tournament favourites Mexico looking to avoid what could be described as a live banana skin when they face a Costa Rica side who must be ruing their second half collapse against Haiti which cost them the group and put them into this quarter final.
One thing which will keep Costa Rica interested was the way Martinique created chances against Mexico in their last match. Admittedly Mexico were as good as through and rested a few but even Canada opened them up a little so there is an ounce of vulnerability to them. The same works for the defence of Costa Rica though and given the style of Mexico I expect them to break through at some point.
I hope Costa Rica don’t just sit in here and look to contain but even if they do it only needs a Mexico strike to bring them out of their shell. I fancy this could be a little nervy and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few mistakes creep in here. This one can have over 2.25 goals as well with all that in mind.
