Harper on the Hatters: No time for dwelling, the next week is huge!

“I hope to be here for a long time”, “this is my club, I love it here, only Barcelona could tear me away from the project here”.

Those were the words spoken by Nathan Jones when he addressed the fans at the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust’s ‘Meet the Manager’ evening in October. We now know those words were empty and hollow, as not three months later he has left for Stoke.

I don’t necessarily begrudge him for leaving, I would do the same in his position, albeit I wouldn’t have offered the soundbites prior to doing so. I’ve been a football fan long enough to appreciate there is no loyalty in the game anymore, but there is no reason why us supporters can’t expect a bit of decency in football, especially from a man who was by and large nobody before the Town gave him his big break.

Alas, that clearly isn’t how he works, despite all the previous acts of love and care for the club. Ultimately it was all false, as evidenced by the fact he couldn’t even remove a Stoke top when posing with the Manager of the Month award he won at our club.

He has gone though and there is no point in dwelling on his departure. There is no time to do that anyway, as today sees the beginning of the biggest week in our history.

More than 3,000 of us will descend on the Stadium of Light for a huge league match against Sunderland later, and then comes what is probably now a £1 million FA Cup replay against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening, with the fourth round tie against Chelsea having been confirmed for TV coverage on the BBC.

However it is what takes place the following night that trumps all of that, as we get the decision on the planning application for Power Court. The inspector has already recommended that it is approved and I expect the committee to go with that judgement.

Assuming that is the case, the dejection of the last few days can be completely forgotten and replaced with scenes of jubilation and celebration. We will need to cautiously remember that it will only be half-time in the big picture, but this news, if approved successfully, would be the biggest news for our club and town in many many years.

Very few weeks supporting Luton are quiet, but this one is seismic in relation to most of them. Here is hoping for three points today, a win on Tuesday night and that judgement we all crave on Wednesday evening.

Now, what’s the best way to Sunderland? COYH!

Nice piece. When all is said and done however bad NJ has made me feel this week nothing comes close to how I felt after losing that penalty shoot out at the Etihad that sentenced us to another 4 years of non league!

A little worried about the prospect of an approved application being called in the the Secretary of State. Can’t remember too many occasions when government departments have supported the club.

    • This is why we need to keep the fight against C&R going and ensure the overwhelming support for the plans remain prevalent. We’re as close as we’ve ever been to this. We just need to keep fighting a bit longer and we’ll get the desired result I’m sure.
