Harper on the Hatters: Sunday is an open goal….. let’s make sure we convert it!

You may think an open top bus parade to celebrate finishing second in the table is a little excessive. Then again it might be that you think promotion happens so infrequently that it is worth celebrating in that way regardless of how it is achieved.

In fairness there are arguments for and against both viewpoints, but one thing that cannot be disputed is the opportunity that such a celebration provides us as fans, with an eye towards the future.

Much like when the ball bounced off the aging body of the Forest Green goalkeeper to the feet of Danny Hylton who could not miss when putting us 1-0 up on Saturday, we have been presented with an open goal, and it is a chance we must make sure we do not miss.

We now know that on the week commencing August 20 the Development Control Committee will determine the schemes for the Power Court and Newlands Park proposals, but just because we have that date does not mean that the fight is over, or that the war is won. It is still anything but a formality that the development will go ahead.

That is because of the ridiculous objection of Capital & Regional who, contrary to their claims, do not give a damn about our town. They are only interested in a pound note and everything else is secondary. There is no interest in seeing Luton as a town, or the football club, thrive again and they are the only ones holding it back.

They have made it crystal clear that they will do everything in their power to delay proceedings as long as they can and it is time for our voice to answer back.

On Sunday, thousands of Luton fans and Lutonians alike, have been offered the opportunity to congregate in an area adjacent to the Town Hall and right outside the ridiculous eyesore of a building that C&R are doing everything to ensure remains the centre of attention in the town, and it would be wrong for us not to use that opening to make our voice heard.

Therefore I urge every supporter and Lutonian to get down to St George’s Square, celebrate the great things our club have achieved over the course of the season, and then make C&R, and anyone else who is yet to realise, aware of just how much we all want this development to happen for the good of our town.

This is our town. Let us show everyone how much we want it to thrive once again.
