Horse Racing – 2020 French Oaks and French Derby Tips and Betting Preview

It was a quite astonishing day of classics in England on Saturday and now that we have had a chance to come down from the excitement and amazement, we get the chance to go again on Sunday when the French version of the same two races are held at Chantilly.

Usually we would separate big race previews into individual posts but actually there is a bit of a low key feature to the French two so we will pair them up in one. There might be a low key air to them but we are still giving both the full betting treatment!

After the Investec Derby on Saturday, we now head to France for their version, the Prix Du Jockey Club which is run over a trip of a mile and a quarter, and has attracted a big field of 16. Victor Ludorum won the French 2000 Guineas & is the favourite here.  He’s drawn on the inside in 1 which might bring about traffic problems for a confirmed hold up horse.

Andre Fabre also saddles the 2nd favourite in Ocean Atlantique who beat last time out beating Irska in a Listed event by 5 lengths.  Pao Alto is next in the market & he beat Ocean Atlantique on his last start, a Group 3 back in May.  On that run, the pair look closely matched.  Mishriff is the John Gosden representative but, due to travel restrictions, he’s having to use a local jockey which is a concern.

Betting

The most interesting runner, and our selection, is Port Guillaume.  His form is nothing to write home about although you can’t do more than win 3 from 3.  Most recently, he beat Gold Trip when making all (previous to that, he’s won coming from midfield & from the back so is versatile), the runner up in receipt of 4lbs that day & he’s since gone and won a Group 2 to frank the form.

He hails from the top yard of J-C Rouget who’s won 3 of the last 4 runnings of this & the excellent Cristian Demuro is in the saddle.  He needs to improve but there’s no way he’d be the yard’s main hope if he wasn’t expected to go well so, at a good each way price, he’s the bet here.

Tips

Back Port Guillaume (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

The second Classic of the day in France is the Oaks, the Prix De Diane which has attracted a smaller field than the boys equivalent, with just 11 lining up.   The Irish have a strong hand & they saddle 2 of the front 3 in the market with Coronations Stakes winner Alpine Star running for Jessica Harrington & Irish 1000 Guineas winner Peaceful for Aiden O’Brien.   The former looks the most solid but 2/1 is a little short to be confident about.

The main home hope is Raabihah who is 2 from 2 & she’s another that looks to hold every chance.   In an effort to find something at an each way price to break the stranglehold of the front 3, we’ve gone with 2 bets, 1 each from Ireland & France.

Betting

Behind Peaceful in the Irish 1000 Guineas was Fancy Blue & she’s fancied to turn the tables here.  That was just her 3rd start & she went into the race with an unblemished 2 from 2 record.  In the Group 1 over a mile, she was caught out the back but stayed on well to grab 2nd late on, looking like she’d be the best suited by this extra quarter mile.   She’s looking to give Joseph O’Brien his first Classic winner & he’s secured the services of the excellent Pierre-Charles Boudot.

I cannot ignore Speak Of The Devil after backing her in the French 1000 Guineas last month.  She’s looking to gain compensation here after she found all sorts of trouble in that race but ran on in impressive fashion to fail by the shortest of short heads.  There are some question marks about the trip but if she gets the extra yardage, her turn of foot could prove to be a potent weapon that makes all the difference.   Again, there’s an eyecatching jockey booking with the brilliant Barzalona on top for the first time.

Tips

WON – Back Fancy Blue (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 11.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)
