Horse Racing – Curragh Friday 28th August Tips and Betting Preview

Another busy weekend of action in the horse racing world begins on Friday when there are another five meetings taking place over the flat and the jumps as we start heading towards the culmination of the flat offerings this term.

They go over the obstacles at Fontwell and Down Royal in the afternoon while the flat racing to begin with comes from Goodwood and the Curragh before Newmarket stages its usual Friday night meeting. We’re targeting the big race in Ireland for our bets.

3.40 Curragh

Preview

The big race of the day is the Irish Cambridgeshire at the Curragh and there really is nothing better than 20 good handicapper’s battling it out for a valuable prize.  There are plenty in with chances but the ground is going to play a big part as it’s soft, bordering on heavy, so anything favouring quicker ground should probably be discounted.  The other interesting factor is that, despite the field size, there really isn’t a lot of pace on so it may be a bit tougher for those that like to be held up.   Njord was a neck 2nd on soft on his last start but a 6lb hike in the weights makes him a vulnerable favourite with 3 year olds So Suave and Flaming Moon probably holding better chances.

Betting

We are taking 2 against the favourites, the first of which is soft ground lover Quizical.  He’s a solid handicapper with his last win coming on this ground at the end of last term off 3lbs lower although, with his jockey’s claim, it’s more like 1lbs lower.  He won with any amount in hand that day, skipping clear by over 3 lengths.  In 4 runs this term, he’s twice run on unsuitable ground but the other 2 have yielded a 1 length 5th of 16 in a Galway handicap off 1lb higher.  He finished well that day & this extra furlong will suit and last time he backed up that promising run by finishing a length 4th of 9 behind So Wonderful in a Listed race, giving that rival 11lbs.  Provided he’s none the worse for those exertions, it’s hard to see him out of the frame.

Our 2nd bet is from the father/son Keane combo, with the horse in question being Laughifuwant.  Quite simply, he’s the most likely front runner and he’s a soft ground lover.  He’s only been seen once this term & ran a good race in 8th at Galway when racing wide & free off an absence of over 9 months.  He’s sure to come on for that.  His previous race record when soft has been in the going description reads 2/15, 1/16, 2/13, 2/15, 3/13 & 3/8, the last of those in Listed company.  There’s a slight question mark over whether he’s better over a furlong shorter but he has run very well over this trip before so it’s hoped he can jump out, grab the lead & fend off the challengers inside the final furlong.
