Horse Racing – Curragh Saturday 18th July incl Irish Oaks Tips and Betting Preview

It is a big day of racing out in Ireland on Saturday where the Irish Oaks at the Curragh is the headline attraction. There is a decent undercard to the big race as well so there is plenty to look forward to throughout the evening.

We’ve had a good look through the card and as well as coming up with a selection in the big race, we have also found a couple of others for earlier in the meeting. Here are our best bets on the Saturday evening card.

6.15 Curragh

Ahead of the big race in Ireland is a big Premier handicap over a trip in excess of 6 furlongs.  17 run and recent races at the track suggest a bias towards the high drawn runners.  The draw puts me off Urban Beat as does the big weight, whilst weight is the concern behind the changes of Laugh A Minute.

Betting

Instead, I’m taking 2 from high draws, the first of which is Ardhoomey coming out of stall 16.  19 of his 44 career runs have come here & his Curragh wins include in Group 2 & Listed company earlier in his career.  Last year saw his mark tumble & off a career low mark of 90 on reappearance, he was an unlucky neck 2nd here before finishing 4th off this revised mark (2lbs higher).  With the better ground in his favour today, he’s certain to be bang there.

Drawn one stall higher in 17, Ice Cold In Alex is as consistent as they come & he deserves a race of this nature.  He was 4th on reappearance in that race where Ardhoomey was 2nd but is now 3lbs better off for a 2 length beating.  Last time out, he was 2nd over a mile (trip too far) off this mark behind a runaway winner in Nebo at Cork.  In his last 6 runs, all in big fields, he’s finished in the places 5 times & all off marks within 1lb of this.  He’s another certain to have a say at the business end.

Tips

Back Ardhoomey (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 11.00 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)

Back Ice Cold In Alex (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 11.00 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)

The big race of this weekend is the Irish Oaks, a Classic for 3 year old fillies over this mile and a half trip.  A disappointing field of 8 has been declared & Aiden O’Brien is responsible for 4 of them including one of the two vying for favouritism.

Ennistymon is the horse & without doubt has the best form over this trip having finished 2nd in the English equivalent behind Love & previous to that was 2nd behind Frankly Darling at Ascot.   Cayenne Pepper from the Harrington yard is her main market rival & she’s the highest rated of these.  After a good 2 year old campaign, she was 2nd behind Magical in the Pretty Polly & if she stays, she could be a tough nut to crack.  Snow put in a couple of good runs in Group 3 company but is exposed whilst New York Girl didn’t look a stayer when running in the Irish Derby a couple of weeks back.

Betting

The Naas Oaks Trial won by Even So might be the race to concentrate on.  The winner was having her 5th career run that day & I’m opposing her with the runner up Laburnum.  She went down by just a neck there but it was only her 2nd career start & she looks certain to improve again.  She won her maiden in convincing style & then improved in that Listed trial at Naas where the ground may just have been a little soft for her.  As a daughter of Galileo, she’s certain to improve now stepped up in trip & she has a similar unexposed profile to the runaway Derby winner Serpentine.  I’m hoping for a similar result here at a nice each way price.

Tips

Back Laburnum (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 13.00 Bet365 BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
