Horse Racing – Curragh Thursday 15th October Tips and Betting Preview

2.05 Curragh

Preview

Not the greatest quality of racing on offer today but this is an intriguing big field handicap over the straight 6 furlongs where we have a favourite that’s only been since 4 times in his career, all in maidens & winning once.  That was last time out & he got up close home to win by a nose.  Fugacious is well fancied but his slow starting nature is a real concern, especially now dropped in trip.  Limit Long won last time out, that was his first win in 17 starts & he doesn’t look the most obvious to follow up.  Drawn in 15, he looks the likeliest front runner & I’d want to be drawn high tracking the pace he’s almost sure to set.  That leaves us with 2 of interest.

Betting

Hell Left Loose is drawn 4 away in 19 & he’s a 4 year old firmly on the upgrade.  A winner of 3 of his 6 starts this year, off marks between 48 & 61, he’s now racing off 65 but he leaves the impression there’s more to come.  Firstly, he’s yet to be defeated when facing yielding ground or worse so the soft ground here is in his favour.  The 3 defeats have also been at trips of either 5 or 7 furlongs whilst his wins were all around the 6 furlong distance, give or take half a furlong.  Last time out, off this mark, he failed to get involved but had excuses.  Aside from the ground & distance, he took a false step early doors & was then short of room on more than one occasion at crucial stages.  Add to that a useful 5lb claimer now takes the ride, effectively reducing his mark below his last winning one, he looks certain to go close with so much in his favour.

The other I can’t leave out of calculations is Pretty Boy Floyd.  Admittedly he’s winless in 15 but his time looks to be now.  As a 2 year old, he showed good form, most notably here when 2nd in the big sales race behind 107-rated Snazzy Jazzy.  That’s since him racing off marks too high & therefore he’s been tried over a variety of trips.  This term, he’s been seen twice.  The first time was over 7 furlongs off 3lbs higher than today when he went off favourite in a 14 runner handicap.  He failed to fire but was found to have a wound post race & was also denied a clear run.  That run was put firmly behind him last time out when, off today’s mark of 65, he ran 3rd in a 17 runner handicap over a furlong shorter.  Colin Keane takes the ride today, which is eyecatching, & with the extra furlong sure to suit & a draw next door to the likely pace, he should go well.
