Horse Racing – Doncaster & Curragh Friday 26th June Tips and Betting Preview

The racing action continues on Friday and at this time of year we have afternoon and evening racing. The afternoon stuff sees racing at Newmarket and Doncaster in the UK as well as Tipperary over in Ireland while the evening stuff comes from Lingfield and the Curragh.

We’ve had a good look through all of the cards and we have come up with one in the afternoon and another couple in the one race in the evening. We’ll begin our daily preview with the afternoon bet which comes from Doncaster before we head off to the Curragh.

A 10 runner Class 3 handicap over 1 mile 2 furlongs kicks us off and the Gosden / Dettori combination are responsible for the hot favourite, Harrovian.  He has top weight and was firmly put in his place last time out when 3 lengths 2nd but he should strip fitter for that run & this better ground will suit.   Away He Goes is his biggest rival on paper & went into his last run with a big reputation but the market drift before the off told us everything we needed to know as he finished 6th of 10.  He has something to prove but remains with potential.

Betting

At a bigger price, Elector is the selection.  This is his first run for a David O’Meara that excels with recruits from other yards and that in itself is almost enough to warrant a bet.   He’s a lightly raced 5 year old who, as a 3 year old, was thought good enough to contest a Group 2 at Royal Ascot, running behind Old Persian.

In an 11 race career, he’s won twice and both of those were on his first start of the year (once at 2 and once last year as a 4 year old) so he clearly goes well fresh.  Breeding also suggests this firm ground will be in his favour, noting he won on reappearance last year on similar ground.

His win 12 months ago was off 1lb lower but, in his 3 runs since, he had excuses.  Epsom didn’t suit, first time cheekpieces didn’t work & 2 starts ago, making the running wasn’t ideal although he did stick on well once headed.   If he repeats that run of 12 months ago, he will go close.

Tips

Back Elector (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

This is a really good looking 1 mile Premier handicap for 3 year old fillies, with a big field of 16 facing the starter.  It’s 5/1 the field & claims can be given to many including the favourite Auxilia whose last 2 runs were in Listed company.  We are going 2-handed in this.

Betting

The first bet is Brook On Fifth who is having just her 4th career start here.  On debut last year, she won a 29 runner maiden at this track before stepping into Group 3 company.  She finished 4th that day, behind 110 rated Cayenne Pepper, 108 rated So Wonderful & 102 rated A New Dawn.  The fact she’s off 93 here makes her look attractively handicapped.

On reappearance, it was somewhat disappointing she finished down the field in the Group 3 Fillies Trial at Leopardstown but, watching that race back, she has plenty of excuses.  From a wide draw, she was stuck out the back early doors & then suffered interference which saw her detached at halfway.  Pushed along, she made good ground on the inside but suffered a troubled passage & never got into the clear.  That run is easy to forgive & I think she looks weighted to go very close.

At a bigger price, Orchid Gardens cannot be left out.  She’s raced just 3 times too, all on the all weather at Dundalk & she remains a maiden.  However, the last 2 defeats (once in Listed company) was when finishing 3 lengths behind the unbeaten Crossfirehurricane.   The winner has since gone on to win the Group 3 Gallinule & is unbeaten in 4 runs but of more interest is the fact he’s rated 106 & is just 6/1 for Saturday’s Irish Derby.

Whilst she was beaten fair & square, she gets in here off a mark of just 80, almost 2 stone less than the Derby fancy for a pair of 3 length defeats.  Lightly raced, you’d be expecting her to improve & provided she’s ready to go after 4 months off, she must surely rate a whole lot higher than her current mark of 80.

Tips

Back Brook On Fifth (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 6.50 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-5)

PLACED – Back Orchid Gardens (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-5)
