Horse Racing – Friday 21st April 4.10 Newbury Betting Preview

With the Craven meeting now over, we move to Newbury where the big races are on Saturday, namely the Greenham and the Spring Cup.  However, there appears to be a good looking 3 year old handicap on the card which is interesting from a betting perspective.

4.10 Newbury

A Class 2 handicap over 7 furlongs see a big field of 17 currently expected to go to post.  A few of these have fancy entries, yet we have a very warm favourite in the shape of Chessman.  He has only seen the racecourse once but couldn’t have been much more impressive with a 2 length victory on the all weather at Kempton, cutting through the pack.

That was an incredibly weak race though and the form has not been franked so it’s hard to believe that quotes of around 13/8 are value.  Instead it’s better to look for something at an each way price.

Solomons Bay – This one looks to be the best each way option at around 8/1.  Firstly, he hails from a stable that could not be in better nick with 5 of the yard’s last 6 runners winning and the other finishing a head 2nd.  That said, each of those horses were sent off favourites so there has to be more appeal than the yard’s excellent form.

The selection was seen 3 times last term.  He opened up with a midfield run over an inadequate trip at Ascot.  That was a pretty hot maiden with the front 2 being the 108-rated pair, Seven Heavens and Lockheed.  Next time out, he ran over this trip at Yarmouth and won in nice style, quickening up well to account for better fancied rivals.

His price is surely so generous based on his final run over last season when finishing tailed off last of 10 in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket.  It is suggested you watch that race back as he was travelling very sweetly out wide, was making progress and still well into contention when he was struck into twice in quick succession.  That made him lose his action and he was immediately eased by his jockey.  That run can be firmly ignored.

He still holds entries in the 2000 Guineas, the Dante and the Derby so is clearly well regarded and looks to be the one most likely to progress outside of handicap company.  There’s nothing with better form in the book so provided he’s ready to go first up, he should go very well especially with this more conventional track in his favour.
