Horse Racing – Galway Sunday 2nd August Tips and Betting Preview

Hot off the back of a hugely successful week at Glorious Goodwood, our attention immediate turns to the final day of the Galway Festival where there are a number of handicaps on what looks like being another decent card over in Ireland.

There are four handicap races on the card and it is the middle two where our attention is formed. We have gone through the whole card and found bets in the central two handicaps as we look to back up Saturday’s 22/1 winner at Goodwood.

16 runners go to post this 7 furlong handicap for horses rated up to 75.  Darkened is due to go up 5lbs in the future after finishing an unlucky 2nd here on Tuesday.  He looks well handicapped but a step back in trip might not be in his favour.  Mulzamm was a winner here earlier in the week but is another coming back in trip & is up 8lbs.  Yet another to run well at this meeting was Eastern Racer who won here on Monday.  He’s up 6lbs and it’s that race we focus on to find our bet.

Betting

The Mpex Kid was only 4th in that race but is the selection here.  He had no luck in running; he was slow to break from the gate & was pushed along on the inside, he then had to be snatched up early too before making an odd move to come very wide round the turn losing a few lengths in the process.  He stayed on all the way to the line finishing 3 lengths back in 4th.  Off the same mark & from a similarly good low draw, he could make amends here.  He was fancied to go well then as previous to that, he won in a lower grade handicap by over 2 lengths.  The stable doesn’t have a lot of horses but they are running well & I fancy this one to be another in the money.

Tips

Back The Mpex Kid (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 6.50 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)

Another 7 furlong handicap with 16 runners but this time it’s a much higher grade, officially a Premier handicap.  Njord is quite a warm order for this after being touched off in a mile handicap here earlier in the week & goes here off the same mark but is back in trip yet again having won over 3 furlongs further 2 starts ago.  Mr Wendell is next best but has won a maiden & has it to do from a tough draw whilst Jassaar did win the Irish Cambridgeshire last term but has struggled on 2 starts at this track.

Betting

The top weight Laugh A Minute is our selection with the 5 year old in decent form this term.  He has previous pattern form & was 2nd last term in the Group 3 Chipchase at Newcastle.  Since the return, he has won really well at Limerick in a conditions race where the weights were against him before an eyecatching run in 6th in the Scurry handicap at the Curragh over shorter.  He probably chased a strong pace there as those in front at the line all came from further back but he stuck on all the line suggesting this step back up in trip is a good move.  The turning track might just suit, he’s been handed a good draw in 3 & his mark has eased 2lbs.  Declan McDonogh takes the ride for the first time & that’s not to be ignored, given he’s 2 from 8 for the yard this year, with another 2 finishing 2nd.

Back Laugh A Minute (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 13.00 Boylesports BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
