Horse Racing – Newmarket Friday 9th July Tips and Betting Preview

The top class racing continues on Friday when excellent action comes along from Newmarket and York. The July Meeting continues at HQ with some big runners making the trip to the Cambridgeshire track.

We’ve had a good look through all the cards and have come up with one in that big meeting at Newmarket, in the one Group 1 race on the schedule – the Falmouth Stakes – where a competitive race is in store.

Slim pickings on Day 2 of the July meeting but there is a cracking Group 1 event which brings the best of girls over a mile from both the classic generation & the older horses.   The Falmouth Stakes has attracted a field of 13 with 8 of those from the classic generation who are bidding to close the gap on the older horses who have a 7-3 record over the last 10 years.

Favourites

The first 4 in the market are all 3 year olds with the 1-2-3 from the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot all in opposition again.   Alcohol Free was the winner that day, finishing in front of Snow Lantern (who finished off well) & Mother Earth who was previously in front of the winner in the 1000 Guineas.  It appears to me that these 3 could go on beating each other through the rest of the year so it’s hard to pick a winner of the 3, & that’s without worrying about the rest of this strong field.  Primo Bacio is the 4th of the younger horses at the head of the market but she was beaten easily by Alcohol Free on her first run this term before winning in Listed company last time out.

Contenders

All 5 of the older horses raced at Royal Ascot in the Duke of Cambridge & that day, they finished 1-2-3-4-5.   Indie Angel won well that day but she had the run of the race & that was a career best.  To me, I’d be surprised if she ran as well here.  Lady Bowthorpe was 2nd & her chances cannot be underestimated as she’s the horse to have given Palace Pier his hardest race of the season, when 2nd in the Lockinge.

Betting

However the one I want to be on at a massive price is Irish challenger Champers Elysees.  This likeable 4 year old is a 5 time winner & had a superb 3 year old campaign winning 4 on the spin including her first try over a mile in the Group 1 Matron Stakes.  Her only defeat came here on the Rowley course when 4th in the Group 1 Sun Chariot on unsuitably heavy ground but even then she was only 2 lengths behind the winner despite not getting the clearest of runs.  This season has been a campaign of frustration with form figures of 4-4-4 but the first 2 were again on ground with cut in it.  On her last start at Royal Ascot, she failed to settle fully early doors yet picked up well to finish 4th, just three-quarters of a length off 2nd.  She’s better off at the weights with all her rivals, 2lbs better off with Lady Bowthorpe & 5lbs better off with Indie Angel.  Murtagh doesn’t just send them over for no reason & with 9 of his last 11 runners in the UK finishing in the first 4, I think the selection looks a value each way play.

Tips

Back Champers Elysees (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 23.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
