Horse Racing – Newmarket Thursday 18th June Tips and Betting Preview

As has been the case all week, although Royal Ascot is forming much of the attention of race fans p and down the country, it isn’t all about the Royal meeting, and some really good racing is taking place elsewhere in the UK and Ireland.

That is the case on Thursday too where meetings are being staged at Redcar, Fairyhouse and Newmarket and having scoured all three cards we have come up with one bet, which takes place at HQ.

The opener is a 6 furlong handicap for 3 year olds over a trip of 6 furlongs.  Sunset Breeze is the favourite of 11 runners here after winning on the all weather last time out by a head.  However, he’s been raised a harsh looking 7lbs.

Baltic State ran some good races as a 2 year old but looks better over the minimum trip whilst Charming Spirit hails from the powerful yard of Roger Varian but looks to be handicapped about right based on racecourse experience to date.

Betting

The one with the most scope for improvement is Abwaaq, having shown promise in his 2 career starts to date.  He’s having his first run for the Chris Wall yard, having moved from Simon Crisford over the winter, and the trainer responds immediately with a new trip which could prove significant.

In 2 runs as a 2 year old, he finished 3rd on both occasions at Wolverhampton over 7 furlongs.  On the first of those runs, he was up against some that had already seen the track but travelled into the race as well as any & looked the most likely to throw down a challenge to the winner.  His run, however, flattened out in the last furlong suggesting a drop in time might be warranted.  It was therefore disappointing to see him race over the same trip next time out when racing too freely on the front yet he again looked the best horse until the final furlong.   In that first run, he finished less than half a length behind Sunset Breeze and is 5lbs better off today.

He looks the type to improve as a 3 year old and, with a drop in trip & a prominent racing style suited to this track that’s strongly favouring front runners, he looks very likely to go close.  He looks ahead of his opening mark of 71 and whilst he needs to show he’s ready to roll on his first start of the season, there are no such worries for his trainer who’s had 2 winners (18% strike rate) in the last 2 weeks.
