Horse Racing – Ripon & Newbury Wednesday 8th July Tips and Betting Preview

After a couple of days to reflect on what was a wonderful weekend of racing, we’re back in business and ready to rumble on Wednesday, where there are afternoon and evening cards across the UK and Ireland once again.

In the afternoon they go at Ripon and Stratford in the afternoon in the UK as well as Bellewstown in Ireland, while the evening action takes in Newbury in the UK and Gowran Park in Ireland. We’ve searched through all the cards and have come away with two bets.

A Class 4 handicap awaits the 14 runners here.  River Dawn has won 3 of his last 4 & he keeps pulling out more despite a rising mark.  The concern is that the 3 wins have come on the sand whilst the 1 defeat in 4 came on turf.  There must be some surface question marks.

Interestingly Frankelio, his main market rival here, is the horse that inflicted that defeat & he’s 3lbs better off here for a 1 length win.  That said, he doesn’t look the type to string a couple of good runs back to back.  Vocatus was 3rd last time out but almost 10 lengths behind the winner so needs more than a 1lb drop in the weights.

Betting

Instead, the selection is the 6 year old Alfred Richardson.  He has top weight here but has dropped to his lowest mark for almost 2 years.  In fact, the last time he troubled the judge was just under 12 months ago when 2nd here off an 8lb higher mark.   He did show improved form last time in a higher grade and off a higher mark.

The blinkers are on & they have seen him in the winners enclosure twice.  That’s a positive as is the drop in grade to a Class 4 for the first time since his first run last year, winning here off a mark of 85 (races off 81 today).   At his favourite track, over his best trip, in the right grade & off a lowly mark, it’s hard to see him out of the frame.

Tips

Back Alfred Richardson (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

There’s a big field of 17 for this 3 year old, Class 4 handicap over the straight mile.   Tom Collins is a warm favourite after a good run last week when 4th at Doncaster, but beaten just a head.  Previous to that, and after winning a novice last year, he disappointed in a pair of Group 3’s & at Royal Ascot but this is easier.   Godolphin’s representative is Historic & he’s been seen just 3 times.  He ran ok at Chelmsford but not well enough to make him a bet here.

Betting

Again, it’s the top weight I want onside in the form of Hollie Doyle’s mount Sword Beach.  He’s seen the track 9 times & has won just once but has been placed a further 5 times.  As a 2 year old, he ran well on 6 of his 7 starts, the only disappointment when midfield in the £150K Goffs behind Group horse & one time 2000 Guineas favourite Mums Tipple.

He reappeared over a trip too far at Kempton so I can ignore that run but ran a cracker in a Class 2 handicap over this trip at Windsor when just over 1 lengths 3rd behind Overwrite.  He was niggled early but showed a great attitude in making a challenge a furlong out before giving way inside the last but sticking on all the way to the line.

He has a middle draw here so has options in terms of tracking the pace.  He’s effective on all ground, is dropped 2 grades in class & off the same mark, should go well.  Add to that a yard in form, a 22% strike rate in the last fortnight, he’s a good each way bet.

Tips

Back Sword Beach (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 Unibet BOG (1/5 odds 1-5)
