Horse Racing – Sky Bet Series: Musselburgh Sunday 25th July Tips and Betting Preview

A new addition to the racing world is the Sky Bet Series, a three meeting series which has been introduced to make more of the opportunity that Sunday racing can provide. The cards will all be televised on ITV4.

The first of those will be run at Musselburgh on Sunday afternoon and it is a decent looking card to start out with. We’ve had a good scour of the meeting and we’ve come up with a couple of bets to get stuck into.

The big sprint handicap is a Class 4 heat with a maximum field of 17 expected to line up.  Typically high drawn horses are favoured but there’s a tendency for the field to bunch against the near rail so luck in running can be important, especially if you’re coming from off the pace.  Gunnerside has won 6 times this year, including 4 of his last 5, so it’s unsurprising he’s the current favourite.  He does have another 6lb to contend with in the strongest race he’s been involved in.  Global Humor is one of 4 runners for Jim Goldie & the bookies are suggesting he’s the most likely of his quartet.  This is his first start at the track & has yet to win over the minimum trip so, despite a couple of wins earlier in the campaign over further, he is passed over.

Betting

The top weight is Glory Fighter & if he breaks on terms, he looks massively overpriced.  He’s 3 of 14 for his current yard of Iain Jardine & that’s even better at the minimum trip where he’s 3 from 11 off marks of 73, 78 & 81.  He gets in here off a mark of 80.  In his 9 tries over this trip where he’s broke on terms, he’s finished 2-3-1-1-1-5-6.  Those last 2 performances, both this year, can be marked up too as the first was when 5th of 17 in a Class 2 race over a mark of 84 whilst his most recent start was at Chester & he had the widest draw but was still just over a length and a half down at the line.  Jamie Gormley is back on board & he’s finished 2-3-1 in 3 rides on the selection.  His draw in 9 looks ideal; he’s wide enough to stay out of trouble but close enough to the rail to be in contention.  He’s versatile with regards to ground & with the only doubt being how he breaks from the gates, his current odds look very appealing.

Tips

Back Glory Fighter (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 10.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-6)

Our second bet comes in this Class 4 handicap over 7 furlongs where we have another maximum field, this time with 12 going to post.  Incredibly, bookies are going 11/2 the field with half of the field trading in single figures.   Lion Tower has won 2 of his last 4 & was 3rd last time out in the Carlisle Bell but a draw of 11 tempers enthusiasm.  Danzan has run some really eyecatching races this year & his form at York & Doncaster put him in with a great chance.  However, he’s trying 7 furlongs for the first time in a while & there’s a sneaky suspicion he’s better on a straight track.

Betting

At a price, Fred cannot be dismissed as he’s drawn well in 5 & is the most likely to make the running around this turning track.  Ben Curtis is on board & if he grabs the rail, I imagine he could prove hard to peg back.  He’s a 5 time winner over 7 furlongs, from just 11 starts, all of them coming from off the front end.  His most recent win was 5 runs ago, back in April at Brighton, off a mark of 82 & he’s just 1lb higher today.  Since then, he’s run well enough without getting his nose in front.  He was outclassed in a Class 2 at Goodwood before finishing 2nd at Leicester off 85.  A mile at the stiff track of Carlisle was too far next time out & it didn’t help that he’s raced from off the pace, something he’s not used to, but showed more of his customary zest when 4th at Epsom when having to shoulder a monster weight of 10 stone.  His record over the trip & the pace angle make him a solid each way shout here.

Tips

Back Fred (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.50 Skybet BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
