Horse Racing – Sligo & Sandown Friday 7th August Tips and Betting Preview

We gear up to another weekend in the racing world with more meetings across the UK and Ireland on Friday where there are five cards on the flat and over the obstacles. Although the standard isn’t as high as we’ll get this weekend there are still winners to be found.

They go at Cartmel and Sandown in the UK in the afternoon on Friday while Sligo and Tipperary form the Irish action. There is also an evening card on the sand at Wolverhampton. We’ve gone through all the cards and come up with two bets.

10 furlongs await these 10 handicapper’s where Mr Mooj from the Joseph O’Brien yard is the favourite.  He’s a 3 year old who was a head 2nd in a big field Leopardstown handicap on his last start.  He may be up 6lbs but being so lightly raced, he has plenty of scope for improvement.  Ambitious Approach has a very similar recent run profile (head 2nd in big field, up 6lbs) but probably has less improvement in him.  Sicario is locally trained from a small yard & won here last time out but is 9lbs higher in a tougher race, and has a significant drop in trip to contend with.  Bashiyr continues to disappoint but he’ll come good one day, it’s just a question of when.

Betting

On his 2nd start for Jessica Harrington, Yulong Warrior is our selection here.  Having started out in Ireland for Mick Halford where he was placed on all 4 starts as a 2 year old, he’s since been over in the UAE for the last 3 years where he won a Listed race & was Group 3 placed.  On her only start since coming back, he was 6th of 12 in a Naas where the weights were against him.  He was outpaced before staying on again to finish just over 2 lengths down at the line.  Today’s race is over a longer distance, 3 furlongs longer to be precise, and that should bring about improvement.  At the weights at Naas, he was within 2 lengths of horses rated 103, 103 and 98 & was in receipt of just 3lbs despite his rating that day of 93.  He goes off 92 today & could be well handicapped with the ground & trip to suit.

Tips

Back Yulong Warrior (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 Betfred BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)

A Class 5 handicap over a mile sees Mon Choix a warm order to dispose of his 10 rivals after winning easily at Windsor on Monday.  He came clear by 7 lengths that day & probably should be able to defy a 6lb penalty.  However, 11/10 shots aren’t for me in handicaps so I’ll look elsewhere.  Kingston Kurrajong & Crimewave both ran well at Newbury on their most recent starts with the former a short head 2nd & the latter 2 lengths back in 4th.  They are weighted to finish closer with a 3lbs swing in the weights.

Betting

However, the selection is Production who last won a year & 9 starts ago when landing a Redcar handicap in a higher grade & off 2lbs higher.  Since then, he’s found marks in the 80s beyond him, didn’t take to the all weather & hasn’t proved himself to be a hurdler.  He’s now moved to his current yard of Ed Walker & has run respectively in his 3 starts, finishing 6th, 7th & 5th.  That has seen his mark gradually ease to today’s mark of 74 &, on each occasion, he didn’t have the speed at the crucial time, looking like a stiffer track & a step up in trip would suit.  This extra furlong coupled with the stiff Sandown finish should be right up his street.  It doesn’t end there as the turning track & his inside draw will suit, whilst Tom Marquand again takes the ride (he was aboard on his last start when a staying on 5th).  He has a big chance for a yard in form.

Tips

Back Production (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)
