Horse Racing – Thirsk & Ascot Friday 4th September Tips and Betting Preview

We have another big weekend in the racing world to look forward to with some great racing on both sides of the pond headlining the action, beginning with some good cards in the UK and Ireland over the course of Friday.

There are five meetings over the course of the day on Friday with racing coming from Thirsk, Ascot, Down Royal, Haydock and Kilbeggan and then the evening racing sees Sedgefield and Kempton staging meetings. We’ve picked out two bets for the afternoon.

An open looking handicap over a mile kicks off a busy weekend with Godolphin’s Ghaly a pretty warm order.  He did win on his last start at Newmarket but looks overbet here on what’s he actually achieved.  Admittedly he could prove to be better than this lot but at 9/4, it’s not a price to get involved at.   Shelir, the mount of Danny Tudhope, is rated a much bigger danger.  Whilst his form looks a tad patchy, there’s no doubt he’s been running in some top races and, dropped back in grade, he should go close.

Betting

We’ll take on both the market leaders with the sole 3 year old in the field, Arch Moon.  The 5lb weight for age allowance he receives is a massive plus but there’s far more to his chance than that.  First up, he hails from a yard in great form, having had 6 winners from 33 runners in the past fortnight.  Form-wise, he’d be vying for favouritism was it not for a disappointing run at Haydock last time out when the very soft ground and, perhaps of more concern, the extra 2 furlongs against him.  Before that, he won on his first handicap start in the manner of one who could easily follow up.  The 2nd horse that day, whom he beat comfortably, went in on his next start by over 3 lengths so assuming he returns to that level today, he’ll be hard to keep out of the frame.  First time racing against older horses, yard in form & a return to his best trip make him a very solid each way bet.

Tips

Back Arch Moon (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.50 BetVictor BOG (¼ odds 1-4)

Just the 9 runners over a mile with Tempus, a last time out winner at Newbury, the favourite.  He was awarded the race in the stewards room that day and therefore only has a 2lb higher mark to contend with today.  That day, he had 2 of this field further back.  Gin Palace ran a super race last time out against a pace bias and deserves to go one better but did disappoint on his one start at the track.

Betting

6 year old Afaak is hard to ignore here, despite finishing behind Tempus on that Newbury run.  In fairness, you can put a line through his last 2 runs as the blinkers didn’t suit (removed here) and he was up against a pace bias on both starts.  The Charlie Hills yard is in red hot form with 7 winners from 23 in the past 14 days, with a further 6 placing 2nd.  He’s an Ascot specialist, having finished 2nd, 1st and 7th in the last 3 runnings of the Royal Hunt Cup.  His mark continues to come down & he now looks very well handicapped.  Back at his favourite track, he’s sure to go close especially as he’s better than he’s been able to produce on his most recent runs.

Tips

Back Afaak (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 6.50 Coral BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
