Horse Racing – Windsor Monday 29th June Tips and Betting Preview

Another week of racing kicks off on Monday with a batch of meetings in the UK and Ireland and as we count down the days towards the Derby at the weekend, there is a lot to like about the action to start the week.

There are afternoon cards at Windsor and Yarmouth in the UK as well as Limerick over in Ireland, while the evening meetings take place at Thirsk and Kilbeggan. We’ve gone through all five cards and come up with two bets at Windsor.

6 furlongs awaits for these 3 year olds where 11 run in this Class 4 contest.  Broughtons Gold is the favourite after winning his last 2 including one in the stewards room.  Last time out, he won in this grade in a Newbury handicap by under 2 lengths but is now up 7lbs.  5 lengths back that day was Tambourine Girl who is now 8lbs better off & has the help of first time cheekpieces.  Bayar is still a maiden & this doesn’t look an obvious race on paper to get off the mark.

Betting

Theotherside is the one with the most scope having had just 2 runs to date.  He won a 15 runner maiden in fine style in his only 2 year old start, quickening from the front & putting the race to bed in a matter of strides.   The 2nd & 4th that day are now rated in the mid to high 80s so an opening mark of 75 looks attractive.

In his only run as 3, he was 3rd at Kempton in a race where the winner looked a good type and the front 3 pulled 5 lengths clear of 4th.  The selection travelled as well as the winner but didn’t find as much as him, but wasn’t given a hard time once the favourite had kicked for home.  He came home under hands & heels and was only just pipped for 2nd.  That definitely left the impression there would be more to come & in a race where there’s no pace & our horse can front run, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he led them a merry dance.  As a son of Dandy Man, he should improve for faster ground too.

Tips

WON – Back Theotherside (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 10.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

Another race for 3 year olds, this time over a mile for this Class 5 handicap featuring a maximum field of 14.   Risk Taker from the Clive Cox yard is the favourite & he ran well recently when 6th to Anfield Girl after being stepped up in trip.  He needs more to land this.    Oksana Astankova was a winner last time out on the all weather but just scraped home & her opening mark doesn’t appeal.

Betting

At a much bigger price, I like the chances of Arafi who is one of two for Richard Hannon.  She ran really well on debut with 3rd to Stormy Mountain, travelling as well as the race-experienced winner before fading inside the last furlong.  It was there that she was edged out for 2nd as she wasn’t given a hard time once beat.   Next time, she was given the coffin box in 1 at Southwell & with everything against her (track & draw), she did well again to be bang there at the furlong pole only to fade & finish 4th, pulling clear of the remainder.

On that evidence, there may be some question marks over the trip but being a son of Farhh, the extra furlong shouldn’t be an issue.  Breeding also suggests the top of the ground will bring about improved form so provided the rain stays away as is forecast, she’s a big price to run a good race.  There are many exposed types in this & she’s completely the opposite; her opening mark of 67 looks fine too, especially as she’s one of just three from the unexposed category that has recorded a RPR equal to or better than today’s mark.   At a rewarding price, a small each way bet is advised.

Tips

PLACED – Back Arafi (e/w) for a 0.5/10 stake at 13.00 Betfair BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)
