Horse Racing: York Ebor Festival 2022 – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The Ebor Festival continues on the Knavesmire on Thursday when day two of the meeting takes place and it does so with some competitive racing up in York, the highlight of which is the Yorkshire Oaks.

That race is one for a watching brief rather than a betting opportunity for us but the support card is very good on Thursday and after a scour of the card there are two races in which we like a bet throughout the day.

The Clipper Logistics is always one of the most competitive handicaps of the year & this is no different with 19 runners lining up for this Heritage handicap over a mile, the favourite currently trading at 6/1.   That comes in the form of Blue For You for Danny Tudhope who has a touch of seconditis having finished runner up on his last 3 starts.  Whilst running well in the Golden Mile, a 3lb rise for a 3 length defeat isn’t ideal.  Echo Point is another who is struggling to find the winners enclosure with 5 second place finishes in his last 6 runs, whilst Tyrrhenian Sea is unexposed & has won 3 times on the all weather but has to prove he’s as good on turf.

Betting

I’ll take one at slightly longer odds here in Northern Express.  He has a 4 from 18 strike rate, with his form having a really solid feel to it.  This season, in particular, his form reads 226124 with the win coming here when he beat one of today’s rivals & the Golden Mile winner Orbaan.    He’s also 4lbs better off today for an almost 2 length victory.  Next time out, also at this track, he was edged out by a neck before running an absolute cracker in the International Stakes at Ascot to finish a close 4th.  Mulrennan is back on board with his form on the horse reading 12731312212 & he has a liking for this track with 2 wins here.  The only obvious question mark is the trip having run almost exclusively over 7 furlongs but he has finished 2nd over a mile as a 2 year old & often finishes his races very strongly so I’m fairly relaxed on that front.

Tips

Back Northern Express (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 10.00 Paddy Power BOG (⅕ odds 1-6)

Plenty of potential on show in a nice looking fillies & mares listed event over a mile & a half where 9 of the 12 runners are 3 year olds, the other 3 being outsiders.  Golden Lyra is the current market leader & she has form figures of 121 with her only defeat being in a Listed race & her victories coming in novice company.  She has potential but will she fulfil it here?   Similar comments could be applied to Haskoy who has won her only race to date, on the all weather, & Time Lock who has finished 1st & 2nd on her last 2 starts, both in novice company.  Mimikyu narrowly beat Time Lock 2 starts ago but is 6lbs worse at the weights today but she did repeat that win with a comfortable 6 length demolition of Haseefah in a handicap on her last run.

Betting

However, I’m going to side with the more exposed Irish trained runner, Supagirl.  Having failed to pull up any trees in 4 starts last year, she has won 3 of 8 handicaps this year & has pretty much improved run to run, with a RPR high of 100 last time out.  Her most recent run, in the Shergar Cup, sums up her chances for me.  Ridden by Christophe Lemaire, she stumbled early in the race, travelled well, had to be restrained around the turn at a crucial point & really didn’t get a clear run until a bit too late.  She finished fast & late to go down narrowly by a neck.   Her attitude impressed massively that day & a small amount of improvement will see her bang in the mix.   This track is very likely to suit & she is worthy of each way investment for last year’s winning trainer, especially with stable jockey Shane Foley now back on board.

Tips

Back Supagirl (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 10.00 Skybet BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
