Horse Racing: York – Thursday 13th May Tips and Betting Preview

It is the middle day of the Dante Meeting at York on Thursday as the Knavesmire opens its doors to some potential classic winners later in the season on a day where we may well get a lot of clues as to what lies ahead in the bigger races later in the campaign.

The Dante itself is the feature race on the card on Thursday, a race where we might well get some clues for the Epsom classics next month. After scouring the card our bet comes in the race prior to the headline one.

2.40 York

A decent renewal of the Hambleton handicap over a mile sees 15 going to post with the current favourite being Brunch who was 2nd in the Lincoln on reappearance.  He’s 2 from 2 here, his last win coming here in August but he’s now 10lbs higher & looks like he has it all to do against some better treated rivals.  That said, he looks to have some improvement left.  I backed Matthew Flinders in the Spring Cup & he ran a nice race to finish 3rd that day but he was previously disappointing here & has been harshly raised 2lbs after a defeat.  Johan was 5th in that Newbury race & should get closer to Matthew Flinders whilst Artistic Rifles has won his last 2 but has it all to do from a 8lb higher mark.  7th in the Lincoln & with in-form Ryan Moore taking the ride, Ouzo is not easy to leave whilst La Trinidad is well weighted on last year’s form behind both Brunch & Matthew Flinders.

Betting

However, the one I’m on is Hartswood for a combo who had a winner of Day 1 of the Dante meeting.  His first 3 starts last year were all at this track, with figures of 312, the latest off a mark just 2lbs lower than today’s.  In that race, he was less than half a length behind Brunch & actually may have won had the jockey held on to him a little longer.  He’s 8lbs better off with Brunch today & whilst his rival has gone onto better things since, he’s weighted to reverse the form on his first run back at a track he clearly loves.  Since then, he ran poorly on very deep ground at Leicester before running well at Doncaster on ground that was plenty soft enough.  On reappearance, he was 9th in the Thirsk Hunt Cup in a run with some promise but probably didn’t get the race run to suit & may have needed his first start for almost 6 months.  Dropped 1lb for this, I’d be surprised if he’s out of the frame despite the competitive nature of the race.

Tips

PLACED – Back Hartswood (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.50 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)
