Market Leaders

Dave Warner heads into the tournament off the back of top scoring in the Indian Premier League which could make him a genuine joint favourite to lead the scoring in this tournament. He is the 8/1 favourite alongside the Indian captain Virat Kohli who doesn’t carry his usual form into the event.

Australia captain Steve Smith is next in the betting at 10/1 and he is another one who enjoyed a profitable Indian Premier League campaign while England’s best batsman Joe Root is a point bigger at 11/1.

Hashim Amla was the only man to make two centuries in the Indian Premier League and he already has a couple of 50s against England on this tour. He is 12/1 to lead the run scoring over the next three weeks with his South African teammates Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers both a shade bigger at 14/1.

Kane Williamson is a class act in all formats of the game and he can be backed at 16/1 to lead his side with the most runs in the tournament. It is 20/1 bar those named.

Profile

It should be noted that each of the previous winners of the top batsmen in this tournament have all been in teams which have made the final so perhaps it could be that we can use that to our advantage in the need to narrow down the field a little.

Although 50 overs is longer to bat than the 20 over festivals we’ve enjoyed recently there is still likely to be an importance placed on being in the top four of a side with the obvious call of the further up the batting your player is the bigger benefit he should enjoy.

Betting

There are three batsmen I like the look of in this tournament. Two I strongly fancy to be playing out the latter stages so I’m serious about them but I’ve a gut feeling I shouldn’t ignore the form of another so I won’t do that.

Aaron Finch loves playing in England and whether he is in the Australian yellow or a county kit he scores runs by the bucket load. In just six ODI innings in England he has two half centuries to his name and he made the world record T20 international score in England too. He has filled his boots for Surrey and Yorkshire in the past too and has already made 137 in the warm up matches prior to this tournament. He loves English conditions and can have a big tournament for Australia.

Shikhar Dhawan is a genuine class act and while you might not think he would have the best record in England he has a phenomenal one. He has an average of around 74 in ODIs in this country including two tons and 97* in just nine innings. He arrives here in excellent form off the back of a very good IPL and Indian domestic campaign and having top scored in this tournament four years ago we know he has what it takes. I think India will go all the way in this competition and Dhawan’s runs can assist that.

There aren’t many better batsmen in this format of the game right now than Babar Azam and while Pakistan aren’t guaranteed to have the best tournament if he can continue his recent mountain of runs they could easily surprise a few. In his last 11 ODI innings Azam has five centuries and an 84. They’ve not all come in Asia either. Two of them were in Australia and one was in the Caribbean so he can handle all conditions. He is in the weaker group so he should be able to score runs in that and at 33/1 I’ll pay to see just how far his runs will take him.
