The Indian Premier League makes its first trip to Delhi for the current campaign on Monday when the Delhi Daredevils finally play on home soil. They host the high flying Kings XI Punjab in what is a tricky opener at the Feroz Shah Kotla for the Daredevils.
It certainly hasn’t been the start to the season that Delhi will have wanted but with plenty of home matches to come they will want to kick a run of form into gear here. Kings XI have four wins from five and another victory will see them go to the summit of the table.
While the record of one win and four defeats doesn’t look good for the Delhi Daredevils this season you have to acknowledge that they haven’t had much luck in the campaign to date. They were given a dodgy looking run chase in a rain affected match against the Rajasthan Royals and looked set to beat Bangalore at the weekend then ran into AB de Villiers at his best.
With that in mind there are excuses and possible reasons to be optimistic that the Daredevils can turn their season around. If that is going to happen though they will need to up their game with the ball in hand because too many of their bowlers have been going around the park and there is only so much their batting can do.
Kings XI Punjab
The surprise package of the Indian Premier League campaign so far is without a doubt the Kings XI Punjab. They have won four of their first five matches and had it not been for another AB de Villiers masterclass they might even have won all five games. The catalyst to their victories has been their powerful top order which has been the best in the competition.
The emergence of Chris Gayle, considering he was left out of their opening match even though Aaron Finch was not available, has been a real positive and as their middle order begins to fire up the Kings XI could be very dangerous. A concern would be that their bowling hasn’t been as tight as it was at the early stage of the season but that could just be playing the situation of having tons of runs on the board.
After a wonderful innings against Mumbai Indians to get Delhi over the line Jason Roy has gone a little quiet. It may not yet be time to bring Colin Munro in but the option is there should they want to do so.
Kings XI Punjab are not expected to make any changes although with their seamers continuing to go around the park it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if we see Axar Patel even though the Feroz Shah Kotla wicket may not suit him.
This is another one of those matches in this IPL season where you wouldn’t be comfortable having your money on either of these sides to defend a score so betting on the match outcome is a little difficult it must be said.
With that in mind I’m heading to the sixes market where the 12.5 line is a carrot being dangled and I can’t resist a chomp of it. There was a match here last year which had 31 sixes in it. I don’t expect that many here but it is clear that both these sides have their strength in their batting and in KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Aaron Finch, Jason Roy, Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell among others we have a stack of players who can clear the ropes. I like the over here.
