IPL 2019 – Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals Betting Preview

The second match of the two in the Indian Premier League on Sunday will see the wicket at the MA Chidambaram Stadium under the microscope once again when the Chennai Super Kings take on the Rajasthan Royals in a big game for both sides.

The pitch here for the opening match of the season was rancid so much better is expected of it here as the Super Kings look to continue their perfect start to the campaign. Rajasthan head to yellow country seeking their first win.

Chennai Super Kings

It has been a successful start to their title defence for the Chennai Super Kings. They have won both their matches and not truly had to break sweat in either of them and already have the ideal platform from which to build another title challenge from. They have shown their worth in different conditions which is never a bad thing and will be quietly confident about their chances from here on in.

The Super Kings are showing that there is no substitute for experience, and while other units have much more in the way of firepower in their ranks, a knowledge of their roles and an understanding of the game is working very nicely for Chennai. You get the impression that more is to come from them too if they ever do get a good wicket to play on.

Rajasthan Royals

It has been a worrying beginning to the season for the Rajasthan Royals. They were the team under the most pressure to begin well heading into the campaign as everyone is well aware that players are going to leave them relatively early in the piece so they seriously need to get winning quickly. Three defeats to begin their campaign wouldn’t be a catastrophe but it would be along those lines.

The problem for the Royals isn’t just that they have lost both matches. It is also the way they have lost them. In the first match they failed to hold their nerve, admittedly clouded by the controversy of the night, and then in the second match their bowling attack was blown away, albeit on a very good pitch. Rajasthan need everything to come together and fast.

Team News

There appears to be no reason for the Chennai Super Kings to change a winning team. David Willey has pulled out of the tournament to be back home with his pregnant wife so he isn’t an option here.

Rajasthan Royals seem to be searching for the right bowling combination at the minute which doesn’t bode well for them. I suspect they will load the team with spinners but once again the four overseas spots look set in stone which will mean no Ish Sodhi.

Betting

It is difficult to bet on this match with genuine confidence because nobody truly knows if that first game was a one-off in terms of the dreadful wicket or a sign of the things to come. My gut impression is it was a rarity. There was only one match played here last season but both teams scored more than 200 runs in that which suggests a decent strip can be prepared.

There was a lot of criticism aimed at the pitch after the first match, quite rightly so, and when MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli come out criticising it you can bet your last dime it gets listened to. With that in mind I’m going to expect a more normal track here in which case the 320.5 runs line looks a shade low. Both these sides have power in their ranks but a good deal of skill if conditions are a shade tricky and if their x-factor players get going we’ll go beyond 320.5 here. The odds on the over could be a big overreaction to the first game here and I’m happy to chance that is the case albeit with a slightly smaller bet to usual.
