IPL 2022 – Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals Tips and Betting Preview

The season is on the line for one of the two teams involved in the Indian Premier League match on Saturday afternoon as the Mumbai Indians take on the Delhi Capitals in the penultimate contest of the first phase of the campaign at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Mumbai Indians have been out of this competition for a while now but that is certainly not the case with the Delhi Capitals. For them the equation is a simple one, win and they will extend their season. Lose and they are done.

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians have been playing out time on the season for the last six matches or so. I mentioned ahead of their last game that to their credit they haven’t just sacked the season off, which many teams in their position have done in the past, and although they lost that previous match, they gave it plenty again so the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who the Indians are effectively playing for here, should get some encouragement from that.

The reason why Mumbai lost last time out was the reason why their season was over in the first place. They just couldn’t contain the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the middle overs of the innings. Even then, they were in position to win the match with the bat but lacked a little bit of nerve at the key time. You get the impression we might see something similar here because there is no doubt their batting is much stronger than their bowling this term.

Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals have been in and out this season but they might just be coming good at the right time. They went into their final three matches knowing they had to win the lot in order to make it into the finals and they have already polished off the first two of those. That makes it three wins from their last four matches so should the Capitals win this match, not only would their season be extended but they might just be the form team going into the play-offs.

I don’t think we saw the Capitals at their best last time out. Their match against the Punjab Kings was effectively a knockout contest so you could understand everything being a bit nervy. There is the potential for this one to be that too but you would imagine that having tasted the occasion once they will be more relaxed for this contest. They just need to make sure that they bat the first 20 overs like they can because Mumbai carry a lot of batting mite.

Key Players

Tim David so nearly got the Mumbai Indians home in the last match. He has had a brilliant season and he has one last chance to allow his stock to rise. These Wankhede boundaries are nothing like big enough for the Singapore international.

Mitchell Marsh is fast becoming the leading all-rounder in the world in this format of the game. He is one of the best number three batters in the game and his bowling is underrated, largely because of the options Australia have.

Betting

I’m expecting a bit of a high scoring contest here. I say that because the Mumbai Indians bowling that has felt the strain all season hasn’t really improved at any stage and although the Delhi Capitals are making better strides in that department, they are going to have their work cut out to keep this Mumbai Indians batting unit quiet throughout the contest. They have shot makers everywhere you look and the more wickets a team gets the bigger the next hitter seems to be.

The boundaries line for this match is 40.5 and that doesn’t feel high enough to me. With the exception of a couple of matches which have involved the Chennai Super Kings in recent times, this has been a pretty high scoring ground. We know the outfield is lightning here and the ground isn’t that big. The ball flies in the Mumbai air too and with the likes of David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, Rovman Powell, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Tristan Stubbs and Daniel Sams all firing for us I expect this boundaries line to be covered.
