The second half of the double header in the Indian Premier League promises to be an entertaining contest as the Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians continue their IPL 2023 campaign.
These two teams are among the most entertaining and watchable teams in the league and this is a big game for both sides so we should be in for a great contest on what is usually a belting wicket for batting in Mohali.
Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings produced an impeccably timed run chase to beat the Chennai Super Kings on the last ball on Sunday. That run chase was in excess of 200 which should give Punjab plenty of confidence. That certainly wasn’t the first time the Kings have surpassed 200 this season and with the likes of Liam Livingstone getting up to speed you suspect it won’t be the last time either. They are probably going to need to keep scoring big with their bowlers struggling in the manner that they are.
To be fair to the bowlers, the pitches in Mohali have offered them nothing, especially the spin bowlers, and on dream batting wickets with the impact player rule allowed teams to effectively bat with an extra batter, carnage is often going to ensue. What has been surprising in the last couple of Punjab outings is that their death bowlers haven’t been able to gain even a semblance of control. That leaves their batting under pressure to deliver the goods. It also makes the toss important in their matches.
Mumbai Indians
This certainly hasn’t been the solid, consistent season that the Mumbai Indians would have wanted when they started out on it but having chased down a 200 plus score themselves in their last match, they now have four wins and will throw themselves right into the top four picture if they can find another victory here. They are another team who have had to rely on their batting, but when you have a top six as daunting as they do that isn’t quite the concern that it might be for some teams.
Much like their opponents here, the Mumbai bowling attack is struggling due to playing at a ground where the wicket is a delight for batting, combined with those new rules. Injuries and having to manage the game time of some bowlers hasn’t really helped much either. You sense if Mumbai are going to win this match then they will need something special from their batters again, unless one of their overseas bowlers can bend their backs enough to snare a couple of big batters cheaply. As we saw in the last game, chasing would enhance the Mumbai chances of winning.

Key Players
In what I think most are expecting to be a high scoring match it might be the team who have the standout bowler in the contest which comes out on top. Kagiso Rabada has the pace and potential to be that player for the Punjab Kings.
On the flip side of that, for the Mumbai Indians if Jofra Archer can be at his best and either bowl four economical overs or take wickets at either end of the innings it might just keep the volume of runs down enough for his team to come out on top.
Betting
These are two of the biggest hitting teams in the IPL and I think we are going to see that play out in this match. We saw 25 sixes when these two teams met at the Wankhede earlier in the season and there was no Liam Livingstone for the Punjab Kings that day so I don’t really see why the sixes won’t continue to flow here. We’ve seen the pitches in Mohali being very good for batting and for my money these two teams are the most powerful in the league with the bat.
The key thing when looking at this match as a potential run fest is the fact that both bowling attacks are leaking traction this season and that is something I don’t see changing here, certainly if the weekend is anything to go by. The sixes line here is just 15.5 and there was 22 in the last match on this ground. We have the likes of Liam Livingstone, Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green and Tim David hitting for us while players like Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran, Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma can all clear the ropes too. I like the over here.
