We have a double header of action in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday with the IPL 2025 season continuing for the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and the Lucknow Super Giants when they meet in the first game of the day at Eden Gardens.
Both of these teams are languishing in the middle of the table heading into the day and so the winners here will move themselves into a nice position as the halfway point of the season approaches.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders are on a lose-win-lose-win sequence which they will hope to end here as it would mean that they will lose the game should it continue. I think it is fair to say that we haven’t seen them at their best yet but there were signs in their last outing against the Sunrisers Hyderabad that they are starting to come to the boil and a win here would have them in the positive for their ledger for the campaign for the first time.
The good thing for Kolkata is that they won that last match despite one or two players who you feel will be key to their fortunes this season still not really hitting their straps so if they can start to come to the party then the champions will be in a decent place. Kolkata bowled much better in the last match but what will really please them is that they were able to post 200 with the bat, and they did so with Quinton de Kock, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell scoring just nine of that total so there is potentially more to come from them.
Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants are on the same sequence as the Kolkata Knight Riders so something is going to have to give here. I think it is fair to say that the Super Giants have been much more convincing this term, although when you look at the quality that they have on offer with the bat it would be a huge surprise were that not to be the case. If they can come away from Eden Gardens with a win then they would set themselves up nicely for the remainder of the season.
The Super Giants have posted 200 in two of their four matches and they would have passed that total in another if they hadn’t reached their target so they are looking decent enough with the bat in hand. On this ground they could really explode if the wicket allows them to. They might need to though because there is no doubt that this is a bowling unit which isn’t as strong as the batting. You get the feeling it is beginning to improve but the batters will win more matches for Lucknow than the bowlers will.

Key Players
You have to wonder whether Venkatesh Iyer is batting too low at five for Kolkata Knight Riders but after he plundered 60 in 29 balls against the Sunrisers we know he is in good form. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he switches spots with Sunil Narine in the order.
Mitchell Marsh has a cushty job in this competition. He stands there, smacks bowlers to all parts and then when he is done he puts his feet up for the remainder of the game. He has got Lucknow off to a decent start so far and they’d love him to go big here too.
Betting
I suspected that the sixes line for this match would be on the high side and at 20.5 it definitely is. I like the over and I’m going to take it purely because I don’t see many Lucknow Super Giants matches not having plenty of sixes but we are definitely getting into the territory where I wouldn’t be playing much higher. Eden Gardens has enough small boundaries and we have enough huge hitters on show here that in a day game I expect the ball to fly.
There was talk of the pitches getting harder to bat on here but Kolkata smashed 200 against the Sunrisers and I’m not convinced there is a lot more in the Lucknow attack to worry the Knight Riders. There is definitely a batting unit in the Super Giants that is in better form than the Sunrisers one and when you think there were 16 sixes in a match where the Sunrisers scored just 120 here last time there is a good chance that we are going to see this line covered. The Lucknow matches away from home so far have had 29 and 23 sixes and I expect similar here.
