Two of the biggest franchises in the Indian Premier League do battle in the one match in the IPL 2025 campaign on Saturday when the Royal Challengers Bangalore welcome the Chennai Super Kings to the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Chennai are playing purely for pride and to bloody a few noses of those with things to play for. One of those teams are Bangalore, who will go back to the top of the table if they are able to win this match so this is key for the home side.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
In past seasons it has been possible to make the finals with 14 points, although this season with no real rain around and three poor sides in the competition, you would imagine that 16 points is the minimum number for progression. Bangalore have 14 points after 10 matches courtesy of seven wins and three defeats so a win here will get them to the qualification number and then they can spend their last three outings looking to secure a top two finish and the benefits that come with it.
Bangalore have batted very well this season. To be fair when you have players with the class of Virat Kohli in your ranks that isn’t exactly newsworthy but given their home ground there is a necessity to bat well and they are doing that. Their bowling is improved and while it still isn’t always the finished article, it does always need to be cut a little bit of slack when we consider the home ground in which they bowl at. Should they get to the finals you can see Bangalore being dangerous.
Chennai Super Kings
Considering the finals was a proposition which went west for the Chennai Super Kings a long while ago. Just two wins in 10 matches means they can now only get to 12 points and fourth place already has 13 so the last four games are all about taking something out of them to put in place and use next season. The big issue for Chennai is they haven’t been about to make Chepauk a fortress and you always worry for them when they are unable to do that.
Quite simply, the Chennai bowling hasn’t been good enough this season. Last term Matheesha Pathirana was a sensation and this term he has been a real disappointment when the Super Kings really needed him to step up after the departure of Deepak Chahar. I’ve never been convinced by the batting order of the Super Kings and that was heightened when captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out early in the campaign. An overhaul is needed.

Key Players
Virat Kohli is all class and he could well shine against a bowling unit which has been put together to do its best work in Chennai and can have a cannon fodder look about it whenever it goes on the road. Expect Kohli to go big here.
Sam Curran is becoming one of the few brighter spots from the season for the Chennai Super Kings and his aggressive innings last time out at least gave his side something to bowl at, even though it was to no avail in the end.
Betting
To be fair to the Chennai Super Kings, they have shown signs of improvement with the bat recently. It has been through individuals rather than the collective but this is a ground where an individual going off on one can be mightily effective so there is a belief that they can be competitive in this match, especially were they to have to luxury of batting second on a ground which is notoriously difficult to defend. Either way, until we know the outcome of the toss I’m reluctant to get involved in the match outcome.
The fact that Chennai have come good with the bat the longer the season has gone on offers up the encouragement that the sixes can flow here. To be fair, that should be the case for Chennai anyway because they have no competitive pressure on their shoulders. Bangalore have been hitting sixes throughout the course of the campaign and I don’t expect that to change here so all things being equal I think over 17.5 sixes has every chance of landing.
