Ireland vs South Africa – 2nd ODI Tips and Betting Preview

Ireland and South Africa play the second ODI of their three match series in Dublin on Tuesday hoping for better weather than they got for the opening match on Sunday, so that both get the chance to earn World Cup Super Series points.

You would think South Africa would do enough to ensure they will be at the main event over the course of the next year or so which means that this match and the next one is probably bigger for Ireland than it is their visitors.

Ireland

This has been a format where Ireland have had their best moments in down the years. They have competed well at the World Cups that they have qualified for including that amazing day in Bangalore in 2011 when they knocked off England. Since they became a Test nation though they have struggled for results against the other Test playing sides so they have a chance to showcase their credentials once again here.

Ireland have never really struggled with the bat in these matches and the 40 odd overs that they batted in the opening match again showed that they are around the level with the bat in hand. Where they do struggle, maybe not as much in home conditions as overseas, is with the ball. They don’t have the out and out pace or the mystery to trouble sides which means that they struggle to maintain pressure and contain teams as a result.

South Africa

The South Africans came into this series off the back of a good series win in the T20 format in the Caribbean and will be looking to maximise their scoring in terms of points for the World Cup Super Series over these last two matches. If they can win both of them then they will be looking good to make it into the World Cup and that will ease the amount of game time their best players will need to have in this format for the remainder of this year and the early part of next.

You would say that the strength of the South Africa side is the bowling, although they would have been disappointed not to make more inroads in good bowling conditions in the first ODI. Where they have looked a little light and exposed in the last couple of years is with the bat, especially in terms of winning their batting innings, and as a result of that they had a disastrous World Cup campaign in 2019. They really need to find someone who can come in and finish the innings.

Team News

Ireland had William Porterfield opening the batting in the first match and that was a resounding success so that is not likely to be changed. The move to use George Dockrell as a specialist batsman is likely to be stuck with too.

South Africa went in without the rested Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje in the first game but those two are expected to return here. Janneman Malan and Keshav Maharaj are potentially the two men to miss out.

Betting

I’m a little surprised at the runs line for this match just purely because of the strength and the weakness of this Ireland outfit. Their strength is so much with the bat and they are very weak with the ball so I’m expecting a relatively high scoring match here regardless of who bats first. Obviously if it is South Africa we should expect them to go very big against this Irish attack but Ireland were well on the way to a score in excess of 250 in the first game and will probably bat better under clearer skies.

The line here is 487.5 which is very low for an ODI in the modern era anyway but especially when the two sides match up like they do. There is a lot of batting in this Ireland side and if they lay the sort of platform they did in the opening match then they can cash in at the back end. This is the sort of line that whoever bats first I think we’ll get it covered. Ireland can post 244 while South Africa are likely to chop off a good chunk and even in defeat Ireland can get us over the total. I like the over here.
