There is a double header of Major League Cricket action on Independence Day out in Florida on Friday and we begin with the current top two in the MLC 2025 table battling it out when San Francisco Unicorns take on the Texas Super Kings.
This is a key game for both teams because although they have their playoff spot secured, the loser of this one will open the door for the Washington Freedom to nip in and snatch a top two place and the two goes at making the final that come with it.
San Francisco Unicorns
The San Francisco Unicorns were the early pacesetters in this competition and while they are still on top of the table and setting the pace, they have slowed significantly to be caught by a couple of their rivals. The start to the season was such that they had a bit of a wobble in hand of the rest and are still able to control their destiny when it comes to a top two finish but that disappears should they suffer another loss in this contest.
The big reason for the sudden halt in proceedings for the Unicorns is their power packed batting has just slowed down and actually slowed in a big way. That leaves them vulnerable because without Pat Cummins there is nothing of note in their bowling unit and they don’t have that mystery spinner to keep the opposing big hitters at bay. They need that batting to come good again but these aren’t conditions which their top order generally thrive in which is a concern.
Texas Super Kings
I would imagine that the Texas Super Kings are feeling very good about proceedings at the minute. They are slowly moving through the gears with key players all showing the sort of form that they would want to be in and they are on a good run having moved into the top two with a rain impacted win over the Washington Freedom earlier in the week. If all that wasn’t enough, the wickets here in Florida look like they are going to suit their bowling unit perfectly.
The Super Kings will still need to perform but they look to have everything in their favour at the minute and even when we get back to Dallas for the finals the pitches there were just beginning to wear too. The one thing you would say about the Super Kings is that they have only won one of the three matches against the fellow two best teams in the league and that will need to change if they are to go on and win the title for the first time.

Key Players
San Francisco Unicorns are likely to utilise Matt Short with the ball in this match but they need their captain to come good with the bat and not just get a start but get them to a big score. Anything else leaves them vulnerable.
Donovan Ferreira showed all of his big hitting quality in that rain affected match with the Freedom last time out and if he can keep clicking like he has been then it will do the Texas Super Kings no harm, neither will his off spin bowling.
Betting
These two teams look to be going in opposite directions at the minute. Almost from nowhere the San Francisco Unicorns’ batting has dropped right off and that leaves them vulnerable to most teams in this competition let alone one as well balanced as the Texas Super Kings. It just so happens that Texas have won their last three matches, although it probably isn’t a surprise when you consider that it coincides with the pitches just tiring a little.
I like the Super Kings here I have to say. I think their dual spin attack will really prosper in these conditions and they have a couple of bowlers who can take the pace off too which should really help them. They also have a couple of batters who are adept in just finding the gaps and turning ones into twos and things whereas with San Francisco everything seems to have to go to the boundary. They will do well to utilise that philosophy on these pitches so it is Texas Super Kings for me.
