Metro Bank One Day Cup 2025 – Tuesday 5th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the Metro Bank One Day Cup is formed of six matches across the two groups on Tuesday as the domestic 50 over competition starts up with the aims of all 12 teams on show to get off to a winning start.

The Hundred has the TV attention for the next month but fear not, if you have a bet on any of these matches you will be able to follow them via the live stream which will be provided by the county which the home team.

Group A

The defending champions Glamorgan begin the defence of their title on the opening day of the competition when they take on a dangerous looking Hampshire side in Neath. That is the pick of the matches in the group on paper but two sides who will be aiming to put indifferent T20 campaigns behind them will meet at Sookholme when Nottinghamshire welcome Essex to one of their outgrounds. The other match completes a trio of outground hosts in this group as Gloucestershire play host to a Derbyshire side who will hope their Championship form translates into the 50 over game.

Group B

There are three matches in Group B to get us up and running on Tuesday as well and two of those are at outgrounds too. The one match that isn’t sees a Sussex side decimated by call ups to The Hundred making the incredibly long trip to Gosforth to take on Durham. At Scarborough two famous counties will get their campaign underway when Yorkshire play host to Warwickshire while in the other one two counties who have already made it through to the Vitality Blast quarter finals will begin their quest to do the same in the Metro Bank One Day Cup when Lancashire hosts Northamptonshire at Sedburgh.

Betting

I like two bets over the course of the day. The first one is at Sedburgh where I expect Northamptonshire to get the better of Lancashire. With the exception of Marcus Harris, Michael Jones and Josh Bohannon this is going to be a very inexperienced top order for Lancashire and the bowling doesn’t look much stronger either. The fact that Northamptonshire have rushed Tim Robinson back to form a twin overseas tilt on this match with Yuzvendra Chahal tells us that Darren Lehmann is taking this seriously. Northants have been hit in the seam department but it might be that they only need three wickets and they are into the inexperienced batters. The Steelbacks have lost David Willey and Saif Zaib with the bat but still have a fair bit of depth with that and I expect them to win this one.

Even though I’m a Hampshire fan I feel compelled to take on their bowling attack here because every senior component from it has disappeared to The Hundred or is injured. Instead, three teenagers are expected to form a seam trio and then a couple of part-time spinners will complete the overs and I expect Glamorgan to take full advantage of that in the powerplay at Neath. The Glamorgan powerplay line is set at 51.5 across the board with bookmakers who are offering this bet and that feels low to me. Eddie Jack went at 11.50 an over for Hampshire in the Blast and while he is better than that, whether he is ready to lead the attack remains to be seen. Neath isn’t a huge ground so it won’t take much for the Glamorgan top order to go at five an over here and I like the champions to cover that powerplay line.
